Driving home the other night, the lights go out on my dash (odometer/mi, etc.) Weird thing though...only half of it went out. I can see my RPMs but the gas gauge and mileage (left hand side) is not lit. Can this be just a fuse or do I have to dis-assemble anything to replace the bulb?

I've not had this problem but I think that there are 3 bulbs - I guess one has blown. If so, you'll want to replace all 3 at once.

You will have to remove the cluster to replace the blubs. I think the 3 inner bulbs require removal of the rear cover. Not a hard project. Even easier if you dont have an airbag.

Thanks all. It'll be about 65 degrees tomorrow, I'll let you know how it went.

My Dad has the same problem in his 94 530i. Hopefully this will work for you and I'll let him know! :)

that happened top my car, but all the lights went out....

turned off the car, yanked the relay and general module, smacked em around, put em back in, fixed.

not all the lights at once would be the bulb, if you get LED wedges they will never die.

How do you take the dash out in these cars, Ive been too shy to ask and dont have enought balls to try. I bought the car about a month ago and have been too scared to do anything about it.

you have to pull the steering column all the way out, then unscew the visible black screws holding the top of the cluster in, then you can maneuver it out.

you will need to turn the steering wheel while doing it, the bentley procedure says to actually remove it, but i didnt have to.

and if you have an airbag DISCONNET THE BATTERY FIRST

i pulled the under part of the dash off and manually disconnected the airbag plug, the SRS system will maintain power to deploy the airbag for almost an hour after disconnecting the battery, so manually disconnecting the air bag is the safest option, and doesnt erase computer info.
