its between the rear view mirror and the angled part of the roof which stops light above the rear view mirror. Its a red plastic colour a lot like an IR reciever or maybe a light lumens detector or something. It does not operate the IR remote. (BTW as per another thread, my IR remote also closes the sunroof and windows etc from 5 meters away)

So anyone got some ideas?

I always thought that was one of the later type of sensors for the alarm and I think I saw that in one of the owner's manuals. If so, it would explain why your alarm will work from 5 metres away.

Mind you, I was most impressed when a friend remote-started her 525i from inside her living room...I gather if you touch a pedal without the keys in the ignition however it will cut out. Darn clever the German engineers!

to make it more clear, the small red one on the dash has a dual function.
The original set includes: an antitheft LED with support for programming the remote, the control unit that goes under the backseat and the receiver next to the interior lighting or sunroof switch (if installed).

IR receiver:

and this is the one with dual function for
antitheft
and for programming the remote

Actually the sensor I am talking about is neither of the two you have shown were with your links. It is only visible from the outside of the car, you look at the rear vision mirror through the window and directly above it, on the angles part of the headliner which sticks out is a red opaque sensor or looks to be an IR style reciever. I hope this is a little clearer.
