LSD (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-e34-3-15-Open-Differential-530i-also-525i-535i-540i_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33731QQihZ007QQite mZ170037052783QQrdZ1QQtcZphoto)

Wasn't this the best ratio for the 540?One question since this is just an hour up the highway from me. Do i lose ASC if i install this and if so should i care?

The ebay item is for an open differential, not a limited slip one. You still retain ASC (Anti stability control). Thats a completely different thing. As for best ratio, thats something you decide on. It's a tradeoff for acceleration vs top speed.

Doh!! I just saw the ratio and remembered a thread talking about LSD's and just didn't even read past that...Thanks for pointing it out. I was thinking about the gains in higher gear acceleration but wondered if there was any reason the traction control wouldn't work with it and if it didn't if i'd miss it here where it snows fairly regularly for apx four months a year.

you want a 3:46 or 3:64 gear ratio. that unit has a stocl 3:15 ratio which you wont even feel.

ALSO you need the unit out of a 540, 740 or an /M car. they are the large units, all others are the small ring gear units.

the 6speed should actually be 2.81, with 3.25 being optimal for a stock engine, and 3.15 being optimal for a cam'd/chipped or supercharged engine.
