View Full Version : How to get a loud exhaust

Step 1; Avoid help from an exhaust guy that cuts and shuts exhausts without ever seeing the effect on a dyno... but at least knows what they are doing.

Step 2; Avoid the dealer. Avoid any kind of informed advice from elsewhere too. Avoid talking to an established exhaust manufacturer with a reputation.

Step 3; Log onto eBay, search for chrome tips and buy one of these kits and take to your local exhaust shop. Get them to remove your cheap, shitty factory BMW system and scrap it. Have them fit the kit, pay them for their time and leave (avoiding their s******s and laughs).

Seriously, just how could anyone live with this done to their daily driver? This is an e38, there'a guy on eBay floggin punters this 'kit' to take to their local exhaust guy. Most importantly it gives them a pair of twin exhausts that stick out like dogs balls for $300 in parts.

However have a look underneath, check out the lovely bend and weld work on the show car:

I mean sure the stock system would be quiet, but is this really what is required to get liven up the noise? Wouldn't the sound be really foul under load if you just removed those huge stock mufflers and jerry-rigged this **** on there? :) Nick

Winfred - youre right about the turbo whistle. My car sounds ridiculous with the turbine noise coming out my 3" exhaust. My silly dynomax track muffler doesn't really muffle much.

4" straight pipe dumping into twin 4" pipes, it doesn't really get loud till about 15 psi then it changes tone and gets not raspy but it has a decent rap to it, the system added 4 psi to the top end and i and almost peg my 30# boost gauge (29 in 5th climbing the big bridge just before the governer starts defueling), when it gets cold i expect to peg it then it will be time for a 50 or 60 pounder :D spool up is instant now, a shift that would of hit 10-12# now hits 20#

IMO, loud exhaust on a daily driver = child like attitude. May as well add neon lights in and under the car and big thump-thump speaker system. Really adds to the "arrest me" look. Hey, just my opinion.

You really need an 18 wheeler Winfred... :D

You simply don't have the tray size on that thing... and the fog-horns on an 18 wheeler are (often) allowed to be bigger (or more numerous) too!

eh... i am only 4 tires and a axle short of a tractor, sounds like one now, i am going to build a air system for a exhaust brake and to test it from time to time there will be a set of air chimes mounted :D

i don't know about the bed size, 11' may not be big enough

nah just a exhaust brake, air actuated butterfly in the exhaust pipe that puts a cork up the engines ass to help you slow big loads, sorta like a poor mans jake brake (may be called a retarder in your part of the world)
