extractor tool for AMP plugs/wires DIY

All the plugs on our cars are made by AMP-Tyco. The pins in the plugs have hooks which hold them back. There is a special extractor tool from AMP, but that costs about 50 $. I have made one from an old telescope antenna and a knitting needle

I usally end up using dental picks to dig these things apart

I saw this before, what is the purpose of the knitting needle as you can pull the wire to get the connector out...what am I missing?

With the antenna rod you slide over the over the female socket pin with the hooks and push the hooks together. These hooks hold the pin inside the plug. Next step is to push the pin out with the needle.

So the antenna has to fit into the hole of the plug and must be JUST a bit bigger than the female pin. Usually it is 4 mm.
