View Full Version : OEM Stereo problems...

I've been surfing the forums but still can't find an answer to my problem...

I've got a 95 540im with the stock radio. It's worked great until now. It won't turn on...it won't ask me for a code...and none of the fuses in the engine bay or under the back seat are blown...

The anti-theft light is blinking, which makes me think the radio has power. I've left the radio turned to off with the car in the on position for one hour, and left the radio turned to on with the car in the on position for one hour, but it won't ask me for a code. It won't beep at me...it won't do anything but keep me from listening to steely dan while I drive down the highway ;)

Nothing has happened to the car that I can attribute to this...it just worked one day and not the next.

does anybody have any ideas? Thanks

I had my radio out the other day, and noticed there's a fuse in the connector on the back of the radio. If you've got one, it might have popped.

Luckless pedestrians...no McDan, cryin' shame. :( Saw them in concert last month, stupendous. ;) Trying to learn to play 'Don't Take Me Alive', almost got there on the Strat.

I've heard that the radio can do weird things when the fusible link is on the fritz, but it usually affects more than that, worth a look see though.

Pull out radio and test power at the connector behind the radio. If you have 12 volts constant, accessory, and ground then you probably have a bad radio.

Haha! Awesome song. Back before I started dental school I used to play the drums quite a bit...I almost had Aja down lick for lick...that one was a doozie.

So I've got to pull the radio out, eh? I'll get back to yall ;)

Hmm, I don't have an allen wrench that size...I'll have one when I get back to Charleston ( I hope ) and let yall know what I find soon.

It's not an allen key you need, but a small torx (star).

Not hex or torx, 5 sided "security" screw. Just force a small (1/8") flat bladed screwdriver in and turn.

They'll make it brand new and ship it back to you for about $90 all in. You will crack up at the little baggie full of toasted caps when they send it back to you.

good folks over there. just send it and wait a week for a brand new oem radio.

I keep one extra in the garage to swap out.

They tend to have trouble when you mod your system with amps, subs, and eq's...and blast really loud...still oem looks the best.

I still haven't spent enough on 2 radio's to come close to the price of the Nak 400

That's cool...I'll check the fuse and if it's not the fuse, it'll be fix the radio time. Do they do 12 disc cd changers too?

It's working! I pulled the radio out and checked the fuse...no problems. Then I looked for a fuse on (or near) the amp, and couldn't find it...

Then I tried my radio and it didn't work. I got in my car about 3 days later and it asked for a code! It's the strangest thing ever. I just hope it won't go on the fritz again.
