the interior/lighting scheme? maybe not even match, but just look the part of an e34. for example, i'd consider a blue backlit blaupunkt to match. bmw radios seem to have gone up about $30 more than they were around this time last year, as it would seem that one has to pay at least $60 + shipping to get one with a code and any kind of assurance that it works. my radio is squealing, and, even though i'm more than capable of opening it up and finding (the probably leaking capacitors), the buttons are fairly scratched up, and it might be nice to try something new. TIA.

Check ebay for older Blau punkts - before they got all nuts on the display.

Well, depending on your model, I have one here that's pretty much apart. Perhaps you want it for the parts ? The buttons are in good shape. Otherwise, you could always get a black permanent marker to colour your buttons black, making sure not to colour the numbers, arrows etc. I also had a slightly scratched button and used that method.

I think mine matches pretty well. Its a Sony. I foget which model, I can look it up if you want. You should be able to find them cheap on eBay nowadays. Brand new it was around $200. I'm not an audio expert but I put it in myself and after finally soldering the connections the sound quality is excellent. Put it in after the 6 disc took a poop.

EDIT: hilarious sig Ryan

The alpine higher end models are black and match perfectly with the car. It comes with natural text white on black(800) or blue(200).

i'm looking around right now at ebay and ubid. if i don't address your post specifically, i'm not ignoring you, just figuring out what to do. its really too bad about the gentleman with the alpina, would have bought it from him at that price. i reeally like the way the stock unit shows up in the instrument cluster, and back during the hurricanes of 2004, the weather band feature helped me figure out how far away power was out (you can triangulate by which WB stations are still functional and which city they operate out of). thanks all for your suggestions, but mp3 playback is nice too :D

Nakamichi CD400 or CD700II ... supposedly these are superior head-units but they're hard to come by around here for me. Since I wasn't particular about matching looks I didn't get into them too much.

Their IN-DV7 model basically does everything with a huge motorized screen, and it has orange lighting as well. Couldn't find a good sized picture of it, but if you check their website, its under "In Car Entertainment"

thanks everyone for your suggestions. i was able to procure a blaupunkt mp3 player, new in box, for about $15 more than i would have paid for a used BMW headunit on ebay. was interested in trying something that could play mp3s, and the offer was for a limited time only, so i jumped on it. its one of their economy models, the monterrey mp35, and can be had from crutchfield for $99 plus shipping right now (i didn't pay that much). the unit came out in 2005, so it isn't that old. screen color is RGB, so i wasn't that concerned about how integrated the unit looked right off the bat. thanks all.

The Nakamichi will look perfect. But few retailers carry it and they are not cheap.
