Here's one for the serious e34 nut - what's this plug then? It's on the driver's side (UK RHD) bulkhead of my car, above the steering shaft (M20B20 made in March 1990).

Diagnostic port? What for? I thought that was the big round multi-pin one on the other side of the car next to the heater vent?

Shaun

Hehe no problem! Keep those guesses coming though! I really don't know what it is. What has your car got around there?

Cheers,

Shaun

Another possible clue chaps - it is a 4-pin connector behind the protective cap.

well, 4 pins does sounds like a heater O2 sensor port.

That makes sense - the O2 senor does not exist on the UK M20'd e34.
Is there a pinout diagram of this connector?

Winfred is correct. It is a dummy plug for the O2 sensor that isn't needed on a car in the UK.

It's a US thing...

Well thank you all for identifying it for me - I really appreciate that. Let's see if I can find some more unused plugs!
