On both my E34s I seem to have a vertical black plastic tray beneath the right rear seat (not under the seat, just below it) and you can pop the top off and there's what looks like a 10mm bolt.

i only noticed this as when inspecting one of the cars I noticed a hole there and in the boot were the plastic bits and bolt which fitted in there.

Now can someone please tell me what the hell this is for ?

I also found a round tool in the boot with these bits that looks a bit like a round chrome 'allen key, but without any hex, its just round' - anyone know what this is and if its connected to the 'hole' or vertical tray ?

Cheers.

It is the negative battery cable junction block, the tool is to hang the wheel on when changing tires.

Ah, OK. Couldn't see any electrics in there though, just a bolt. If you want to tap into the negative using this, do you just connect to the bolt then ?

Cheers.

Since the battery is beneath the seat this is provided as an easy way to disconnect things if you want. I suppose you could hook things up here but the positive is still under the seat.

Ahhh, just an earth point I guess. Many thanks for satisfying my curiosity. Cheers.

OK thanks ! What I dont get is why the plate/tray was removed in the 1st place and shoved in the boot ! Well nevermind, its all back together now.

So when they tell you to disconnect the negative ground on the battery before doing work, is it acceptable to disconnect this and be safe?
