I put one of these no-name chips in my wife's 93 325ic, prolly the same engine as yours -- m50 single vanos. It has the -413 DME:

I know I should have bought one of Mark's chips (sorry Mark, if it's any consolation, I'm still running your EAT chip in my m30 -- runs great and I still highly recommend your chips to my friends). The Ebay price was too good to pass up.

It makes a noticable improvement. A little more torque at the bottom end and pulls much stronger at high rpm's. She's not after performance but I'm thinking as long as she keeps her foot out of it, it will get a slight improvement in gas mileage. She noticed right away that it shifts better (5-spd manual). I'm not sure why that would be -- can't explain it. Maybe the rpm's match better between gears?

So far it's getting by with mid-grade gas. I put premium in it for the 1st tankfull but with knock sensors, it will tolerate lessor grades. We're at high altitude (5500 ft elev.) & can get by with lower octane.

If you're after the absolute best overall performance, get one of Mark's chips -- about $229 ea:

I've got it, happy w/it, lots and LOTS of folks here have it.... other nice thing is Mark chimes in on the board frequently as well...so he's a part of this community.... so basically I second the EAT recommendation.

I believe so, but you supposedly get better fuel mileage too so it makes up for it.

Pull the DME and check the last 3 numbers before ordering, it should be 413 on your car but could be different depending on build date. There are 2 chips available, one with stock rev limiter and one with increased limit.

EAT chips require 91 octane (US standard R+M/2) which should already be used for the higher compression m50tu motor without the chip. Mine pinged alot when I first got it, I put regular gas in it the first time before I read the owner's manual.

The engine is allowed to rev higher.
