The shop told me last week my right front strut is "weak".He said when the car was up on the lift and he pushed up on the wheel there was more give than the other side. How much more i don't know and he didn't say i had to replace it or risk a catastrophic failure on the road. I don't notice any softness when turning hard right and the front end looks level. Guess I'll wait and see.

visit a shop with a shock absorber testing device such as this one
http://www.sachs-boge.co.uk/direkt.php?link=owx_8_29837_2_6_0_36376897288bd1.h tml

You will get a print out of the testing diagrams.

Heh, every solution to their problem is to replace the shock. Nice.

push down on the bumper with your knee, really compress the suspension and see if the car bounces before it settle back down.

Before I was hit in my last E30 I had change out the shocks, then some ******* hit it. Rip. :( But the 540i has great shocks on right now! The previous owner put some bilsteins on her. :D

Pics of said E30 :(

e30s with 5 speeds and blown front struts are kinda fun, if you get a good bounce going you can hop the front end off the ground while going down the road with just the throttle :D

LOL I never tried that. The pictured E30 was a 5 speed. I had a lot of fun in that car! :(

Uh-huh. Let me guess: the 'weak' side was the one on which he was pushing with his left hand.

If they are Bilsteins they need replacing.

I believe they are the originals. The certainly weren't blue and yellow.I'm looking for a shop with one of those Sachs shock testers. As i said i notice no sign of it while driving and the bounce test is negative. Its seems solid to me.I tend to think the shop is being very conservative in hopes as a newbie i will just do whatever he says .
