Dragging? Did you call Kirt yet? Sounds like just the valve body only... not entire tranny.

Maybe you could use this as an opportunity to swap to a 5 or 6 speed manual?

:)

Several hours? More like a weekend. I think the cost is a couple hundred more than the rebuilt tranny... Ask around... the thing is that there is a bit of headaches as you have to get all the bits... and the manual tranny... you are taking a chance getting a bad unit (buy from reputable dismantler w/ warranty).

Oops... I forgot the rear end too which would put you maybe $1000 over the cost of rebuilt tranny... Guys... please help this guy out on the cost of conversion.

Vines Automotive quoted me 1k$ for everything to get it done for a 95' 525i, but this was a while ago and he had a donor car in hand. I'm assuming that he gets far less wrecked 540iMs.

If you bought it all piecemeal it would cost a lot more, but still under 5k$ I'd reckon. This was the reason why I got the 535i- I couldn't find a 525i with a 5 speed at around 7k$ in NY/NJ/CT, but I lucked out with the 535i. For some reason 525iMs were hitting the 5digit range while you could find one with an auto for almost nothing.

But if you're going to have to shell out for a new tranny anyway, you'd be in a better position than I was. I would tack on at least another 1000$ for labor if you're having someone else do the labor.
