3rd gear synchro

My independant says my 3rd gear syncho is going and there is no fix other than replacing the tranny. He also said a used 5 speed will cost about $1000 and another $450 in labor. Does this sound reasonable and are there any other "makes sense" options?? 1990 535, 133k miles. :(

3rd gear is not a likely syncro to go - 1st and 2nd usually go waaaaay before 3rd. I'd get a second opinion.
