BMW 318 Engine compatability

Hi Folks,

I have heard some mixed views, but does anyone know without a shadow of a doubt if a BMW 318 engine will fit into a 518 ?

The mechanic who will be fitting my engine seems to think not, but a few scrap dealers i have spoken too have told me otherwise.

Did a search on realoem.com and the 1995 518 short-engine code does not match any 318's.
I guess the mounting points might be different.
