I know that the doors on the E34 are a weak point, and I've heard that the door reinforcement plates (http://www.koalamotorsport.com/parts-home.asp) sold my KMS are a smart buy to prevent damage to the frame where the door mounts.

I don't have a problem right now, but I've been eyeing up buying a set for my car when I find $70-80 laying around. My question: how many people here have them(either because their doors broke, or security to prevent it from braking)?

I made my plates myself. Cheapest. :)

I have them. We had that failure on our old 525 and it made a dent in the door like an outie belly button. For that reason I was paranoid and had them put on my car immediately. My indy had them for $10 each which is cheaper than the source. Don't know why.

Any tips on how to fabricate them?

Thanks

I just don't swing my door all the way out with any amount of force.

I agree, you guys should be opening and closing your doors without any force. Be gentle :-)

I used 2mm steel plate, just cut it so that it is aligned with the door, then drilled holes for the screws, and for the stopper.
Real simple actually.
I think i have some pictures somewhere.
