Well, I've been trying to figure out how to program this new remote. I've found what looks to be the alarm module (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE63&mospid=47410&btnr=65_1000&hg=65&fg=60&hl=23) - under left passenger seat, in front of GM and RM. However, I do not see any place to put the chip found in the remote (which is not the chip I've seen described in most other posts).

I'm quite baffled at this point.

This is NOT the chip I see in my remote:

This is the key I have:

This is where I located the alarm module, if that's what that is:

As far as i know your system MUST be configured using the D.I.S. system at a dealer.......

Your key doesn't appear to be new, so I'm guessing you changed the battery but had no battery in the remote at all for more than 10 seconds cuasing it to clear?

Go to a dealer (take any other remote control keys or they'll be barred) and have them reprograme it for you.....

Turns out I may have bought a slightly different remote than what I should have...

The original remote has a small LED shown in my original post. The used remote I bought does not have this LED, and appears to be of a slightly earlier design.

I do know these remotes can be DIY reprogrammed (holding a button, then pressing another 3 times) , but either my old remote is partially broken (was dropped in water, LED works with new battery) or the alarm has some fault with it. I'd like to determine which, in the most cost-effective manner.

However, I do not know if I can just buy a matching remote and program it for remote functions. I know the immobilizer code is unique, but I believe I should be able to use the remote still...

My understanding is that reprogramming the alarm manually wipes any other keys out of the alarm system, maybe this is just the Aus system (315 mhz)?

I don't know.

We always use the d.i.s sytem to reprogram the alarm module.

Is your alarm infrared or radio?
where is the alarm LED located in your car?

P.s which photo shows you OEM key? the only key I see is too dark to identify whether is IR or EWS.

I believe it's infrared...I have the infrared receiver on the dash. Not sure where the LED is...since I've never activated the alarm.
