National average price - private sale* $43,200 - $49,500
Price when new (RRP) $100,775

very nice. I want a 2003 e39 sport version. I think I want the 540i version with automatic.

I'd get one a couple years older with the V8.

WHAT?? If I could afford an 03 sport E39 they only way I could justify and auto is if I got a wagon. Even then once the auto blew I'd look to swap in a 6 speed.

Nice car. the 2001-03 E39 530i with 5 speed manual and sports package is the best used car value in BMW lineup. Too bad this one is an auto.

The thing that makes the 2001-03 530i nice is the rack and pinion steering. Nevertheless, a few questions:

1. does the owner have all of its service record? If so, see how often service maintenance was done. i.e., when were brake fluid and coolant flushed (every 2 years?); how often was auto tranny and differential fluid changed (every 30,000 miles?); does car use synthetic oil? If so, how often was it changed (every 7-10,000 miles); has water pump, plastic radiator, plastic coolant reservior been changed, etc.

The main concern is the auto trans. If the auto tranny fluid was changed every 30,000 miles or so, it should last a long time. If not, be prepared to change it at about 100,000 miles or so.

2. ever been in an accident? If so, when and where?

3. finally, a couple of questions I always ask is how did this car look new and how close is this car.

It looks as if it is a dealer owned car, sold as a CERTIFIED pre-owned BMW.
Likely, all service was done by the dealer at suggested intervals.
The tranny has lifetime fluid and dealers don't touch them, even if you ask them to.
Owners who go the extra mile of changing fluids more than BMW suggests don't usually return them to the dealer to sell, which this one looks like it is (see the front plate).

To each their own. I commute every day and my wife "requires" an automatic for me to keep up my BMW habit. BTW, my first two BMWs were 5 speeds so I do know how to drive a manual. So there! :)

I don't usually find e39's hot, but this one just looks so damn hot :) I'll go see it in person. It's about 8 kms away...

IMHO it's all about the wheels. Same with the E34, I guess. I really love the Style 5 rims on, well, either of them.

I think the interior quality of the E39 is a disappointment, though.
