Have been juggling ideas about getting more power for the car. One idea is installing the E36 M3 S50 motor with transmission, ECU and harness, etc.

Ive seen on the bimmerforums board a calypso red 525 with the S50 and supercharger kit. Looked around and sourced a complete motor with transmission and ECU for a decent price. Doing a project like this requires nothing but research and time, but I cannot find info on whether the existing propeller shaft on my car will fit with the S50 motor/tranny package unless there is another stock BMW shaft that is compatable. Otherwise, I dont like the idea of having to spend lots of $$$ on a custom prop shaft.

Anyone have any input on the M20 to S50 swap? TIA....

You think a custom driveline will be "lot's of $$$" after buying a S50 and supercharger kit?

Uh...something in your estimating process is just a wee bit off.

Hey, Jeff, you're right about my being "wee off", I didnt clarify to the point exactly. I'd rather do this project with everything being bolt on and plug n play so as to avoid extensive custom items. If it requires lots of custom items, then I'll just scrap the idea. I can deal with custom brackets and such for engine and tranny mounts, I can weld, fabricate, etc. But making my own driveshaft, dont think I can do that one!

As for a supercharger kit, that was only mentioned so that if anyone knew of the car i was talking about, it would ring a bell. If I can pull this swap off, I think with 240 hp will be more than enough power :D

There's a shop in town here that made me any driveshaft I needed as long as I brought the yokes for about 150 bucks. Don't let that scare you from doing your conversion!

$150 sounds promising, not intimidating, thnks for the input

It is an easy swap and shouldnt inolve much custom work at all. I know the S50 will bolt upto a 525i M50 tranny, and than you could just use the driveshaft from the same car. Other than that there isnt many differences between the M50 and S50 so you can use all of the brackets from a 525i M50

Ive been reading and fell upon this OBD1 and OBDII items, also EWS...serious business?

go for an OBD1 harness, seriously.

OBD-1 is definately the way to go, all of the OBD-II guys switch to OBD-I because it is simpler and has less problems, especially to do with modding. EWS is not too much of an issue anymore because you can now get EWS delete chips for the ECU from either EAT or from Turner

That is Sheila's car. Crate s50 with a Dinan charger and some other goodies. Log on here (wichitabmw.com) (http://www.wichitabmw.com/index.php?name=Forums) to shoot her a message and get more info on the car if you want it.

Ok, the motor I sourced is an OBDII S52 3.2L. It's been advised to avoid this engine and go simply with OBDI S50 3.0L. I think the best bet is to source a motor and tranny that has "passed" some kind of certified BMW technician testing. Will also need EWS bypass.

Compiled a list, so far, of the parts needed, and will soon start to develop a budget.

I think the most crucial part of this project is going to be the wiring of the existing with new. Will see what happens.

Just curious to know if my 3.71 open diff. ratio will need to be changed.
