So I checked into realoem.com for some gasket numbers and punched in my serial number. It comes back and says my 540i was made in 10/93. However, all of the papers I've seen say it was a 1994. How can I check these numbers? What should I look for on my car?

It's a 94 model year, my car was made in oct '90 and is a 91. it's probably one of the first m50s out there.

The build date and the model year are not necessarily the same.

Yea, the build date is usually in the year before the model year.

generally after july the car is considered the next year of production, IE 8/94 = 95 6/94 = 94 but july can be ether depending on who you ask but imho 7/94 =95

build date 11/88, model year '89. 540's were only available in model years '94 and '95, with the 6 speed version only available in '95, iirc.

There is only 2 years of E34 540i's 94 & 95. My car was build 9/95. it really should be a 1996 MY.. But BMW decide not to have a 96 model year for the 5series..

E39 5series starts 97...
