I've been giving this much thought, and testing the limits. Though my upshifts are by no means rough, how does one achieve a silky smooth one? Yeah, without dsg/tiptronic/slushbox :)
Downshifting you doubleclutch, so upshift...
Don't come completely off throttle but come out just enough so that the next gear lines up at the proper RPM. Quickly, but just enough to take torque off of the synchro drum and allow the shift.
Just the instant about to shift, put a *slight* pressure on the shifter toward the next gear you want to hit. As the throttle eases, the clutch goes in, and the torque comes off of the drum, that slight pressure will "release" you into the next gear.
I use to be able to do this in the light Passat gearbox, but the e34 has much greater resistance.
