New to bimmer.info have a 1992 e34 535i european model. I have oil in my coolant but there is no coolant in my oil. I have read conflicting reports as to whethor or not I have a blown Head Gasket, is this the case? If so what would you estimate the cost to be?

I just finished a headgasket job on my 535i. It took many hours of labor and a few hundred $ in parts. At the minimum you'll want to get a upper engine gasket set which was around $100 and new headbolts for a few $ apiece. Its a doable job if you have another car to drive while its apart.

Search the forum for more info, there are many of threads on doing the M30 headgasket replacement.

auto trans? maybe you have coolant in the trans instead of the engine.

might just be an oily substance and not necessarily motor oil. also if someone already replaced the head gaskets there could have been residual oil in there. is it a large amount of oil or what?

Can be on some models, where the radiator (sectionally) is splitted into coolant and trans fluid cooling, like in my 750 radiator.

Headgaskets usually blow where subject to extreme heat and pressure ie. near combustion chamber or coolant passages. Hence you often find coolant in the oil but not other way around - but not impossible. You need to investigate further eg. any recent repairs carried out on engine which could have caused oil to mix with coolant?
M30 engine headgasket commonly blows near cylinder no 6, as mine did.
I paid about $100AUS for Goetze brand gasket set in Australia - ought to be cheaper in Germany.
