Interchange what? ECMily fluids?
:D
Just kidding, I know what you are asking. DME's (ECU's) can be swapped with others, for example any later M20 DME such as a 380, 525 or 525 can replace a 153 or 173.
If you have a specific question, post here and I'll try to answer it.

ecm/dme what ever we are supposed to call the main fuel/ignition computer. Some of this bmw stuff is harder to catch on to than normal. Like why their called bimmers here when all I have heard is beamer my whole life.
Anyway I need to know what dme computers are compatible with my 1994 318is. Are there specific numbers I can cross reference? Will the 325's work? Does one from an automatic work in my stick? Will they have to be reprogramed?
I don't have a clue.
thanks,

If your DME ends in 282, you could also use a 357 but take the chip from your DME and re-install in the 357 which is the only other one you can use, no DME from a 325 is compatible.
You don't need to reprogram it, just swap in your chip.
