That image was taken with a Canon G5 in MACRO mode with a mirror... thats the only way I could even see into the space where the marks are at. I set the motor at tdc and went down to the oil pan and did this:

I guess BMW didn't really intend the timing to be "checked".

The marks are only there for assembly, the DME checks the timing and you can check the DME.

Another way to check it is at No. 1 piston TDC, you can insert a 1/4" diameter drift under the starter to lock the flywheel.

So he shouldnt be complaining about the TDC marks.

Need TDC marks to do anything with an ECU - they should make them readable what if an M30 or M20 with distributer has a misfire/distributor lock problem?

No, what blows is seeing the unused crank position sensor boss & thinking it was lost after doing belts & a water pump. The boss is still there on the S52 as well as a friend's (97) 328 motor, m25 maybe?

nah that's what makes it easy to drop that motor in place of a m50

Thats right - we just put a S52 in an E30 and noticed no front CPS. Whats the tooth arrangement on that tone ring?

been a while and can't remember, the toothed ballencer that comes on a m52 (even though theres no sensor to read it) i found to be wrong to use with a m50 computer system, wrong tooth pattern/count, found that out on the e30 conversion i helped on when the ****er wouldn't run right till we tried a m50 ballencer

Was the M50 computer vanos or non? Because we found out the vanos and non vanos wheels are different and thus if the M52 had the vanos count and you had the non vanos ecu that could be f-ed. I will find out what the S52 motor looks like - I need to set it up sometime soon :(
