View Full Version : New transmission...Again...

Well, I got the trans program message for the second time in 5 months. First time, when we drained the transmission, ATF was black as hell and smell burnt fron 12 feet away, full of metal shavings. So no time to screw around, I changed it. Being a cheap bastard, I found a used one for $800. All was well until last week.

Trans program came on and the tranny went to ****... Went thru all the check procedures and no dice. Took it to a specialist this time. Did his thing, finally opened the pan and voila, full of shavings again. He say's they're something grinding up inside, possibly the 3rd and 4th gear. But he's positive, it's toast...

Checked with the junkyard. Here, the law gives us 3 months warranty. I bought the tranny in March so they basically said I could choke on it. What really pisses me off sometimes about my BMW is I take care of it as much as it needs and I still get screwed. I have friends who drive shitboxes with over 200000km and they never changed their ATF and their cars are still running...Seems a little unfair.

Moral of the story : Screw the lifetime tranny fluid. Have your tranny serviced. I thought all was good with the first one because of it and it blew up at 155000km so my fault... Don't be a cheap bastard, if it needs a rebuild, reduild it. Everything else is a gamble and the house always wins in the end and you lose...

End rant.

i believe only the 540 had lifetime fluid, standard ATF changes for other models is 30-50K depending on driving conditions... mines probably closer to 20K hehe.

HOWEVER.... the fact that there are so many shavings leads me to believe something along the driveline isnt balanced or in line with the tranny, and its pulling the input shaft in a direction other than straight on. double check the driveshaft and differential mounting hardware, as well as the engine mounts.

I realized the lifetime fluid thing too late. I guess I'll be paying for being asleep at the wheel...

I discussed your second point already as I too began feeling suspicious of other causes. My mechanic said he always check those things went he rebuilds and reinstalls a tranny so we'll have to wait and see...but thanks for pointing it out...
