Hi following onto a thread I started earlier, it was suggested to me I should have the gearbox oil changed while Im getting my new clutch fitted.

What I need to know is what type of oil I need ( part number ? ) and how much.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Rory.

i run penzol syncromesh now and love it, i used to use Swepco and it was great until the winter came. I would say stay away from Swepco if you have a cold winter as i could not sync into first unless from a dead stop, autostarter helped but not nearly as cheep as fluid.

Well, I just flushed my transmission. The master tech at my local dealership suggested Castrol Dex III.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic. No problems on a very well used tranny (300+k)

2 quarts of MTL will be more than enough for 1 manual gearbox. I also use Redline 75w90 for the diff'rentials. They take almost 2 quarts.

Redline MTL was great twice over in my high-mileage E28 533i. Made cold shifting a little easier. Redline also makes a synthetic D4-ATF if you need to stay strictly within warranty (although that's pretty much over for all of the E34s by now!)

Enjoy!

How often should you change out the diff fluid or is this also "lifetime"? Is it hard to get at?
