Damn I wish I had the time, money, skill to do such a job. I installed a 15" sub in my car and I still have to mount the amplifier in the trunk its just hanging on in the floor of the trunk! And that was 2 weeks ago.

Dave MenheereYep. that's the go. Niiiiiiiiice. I hope he writes it up properly so everyone can see how. Those headers look like a nightmare, tho since they are custom surely one would get a set made to accept a pair of snails too????

So what goes wrong with an M62? :D

<Those headers look like a nightmare, tho since they are custom >

I wonder what they cost him to make? I believe Dinan is the only tuner who makes a header for the E39 M5 and E52 Z8, and he wants $8,000!!!

<what goes wrong with an M62?>

According to Mike Miller in this month's Roundel Tech Talk, the main problems appear to be:

15mpg, dinky fuel tank, ZERO service information, excessive oil consumption (I believe some early E39 M5 require *special* BMW only Castrol 10-60 oil), and possible fuel pump issues.

However, the biggest issue appears to be clutch wear - lucky if you get 60,000 miles. The "fix" is the UUC Motorwerks upgrade - lightweight flywheel and 850CSi clutch kit. Expect to pay big bucks!

Also, with all that power, be ready to buy lots of tires too!

Sounds like my kinda upgrade! No point if you can't shred the tyres! No point if it doesn't use gas!

No point doing anything unless the drive train tends to wear when abused.

As for oiling problems and no info, okay I'd be worried! Let alone forking out for a pair of solid-gold headers... :) Nick

lubro moly also makes a 10W60 oil for S62s and the like.

if you really wanna go nuts, you can have the S62 converted into a racing spec engine, with upgraded... everything, for madly insane $$$$$$$$

Dinan isn't the lone supplier of headers anymore ... see link

Not cheap either but a better deal then Dinan. I think Hartge and the big European tuners offer headers as well.

Nice swap though! I hope he post some more pics and a write up. The performance should be interesting and for some of us facing the prospect of rebuilding a S38 the price might not be totally insane ... I wonder if the wife would believe that :)

That is very cool but I don't think he's going to get around that DME issue without an E39 dash or going standalone ECU

Thanks for the link! I'll check it out once I get to work. My friend and I were just wondering about this the other day (he has a E39 M5 actually). I need some more get up than the M30 allows for! As long as I don't drive my M3 (which keeps up with his E39 M5 mind you) it's just fine... or, as long as I'm not following his M5 for that matter! ;)

Hhmmm... I have access to insurance auctions too and a full shop at my disposal. Very interesting. I think a moderately sized snail might be easier, though not nearly as cool.
