I just got a crappy 89 525i. It needs alot of work. Slowly im following the sites information to fix it up. I just need to know if theres a way to make it quieter. The engine roars realy loud and it gets on my nerves. Thx

If it roars, it's not an engine. You've bought some sort of large cat. Careful, those things bite.

Hah! I kill me.

Is it an exhaust noise, or a sound like a big-ass fan?

If it's the former, fix the exhaust leak.

If it's the latter, replace the fan clutch, which is seized.

A roar...probly the fan clutch.

Where is the sound coming from? Can you be more specific about what it sounds like? Do you have an aftermarket air intake?

Are you sure the new fan clutch is good?

Fill out your bio dude and give some extra info about the car. I assume that it's an M20 but it may also be an M50. Help us to help you.

I have a 91 M50 and have a similar issue, believe my exhaust has deteriorated beyond simple welding repair, is it crazy to replace it? Should I just enjoy the deep loud noise and cover it up with a larger subwoofer?

no you do not have a similar issue
imagine the sound of your m50 with an exhaust leak and multiply by 1 000 000
that is what an m20 with an exhaust leak sounds like.
gives you headaches
and just generally will probably end up killing you through induced suicidal tendencies

why is the M20 so much worse?
