touring truck latches don't work

The trunk latches on our '93 525iT don't work, we can only open the trunk whit the key. Is this the sign that the wiring harness is shot (the lights work), or do the latches themselves go bad? TIA.

I'd put my money on the wiring. When I bought my touring it was my rear wiper and trunk latches that didn't work. When I open things up, there were a lot more wires that were about to go.
