sure enough there was a bolt rollong around in the pan, looks like a LONG time from the wear pattern. both nuts were finger tight too. I loctited the nuts and bolt after adjusting the chain tension.

The pump bolts were not tight either, all of them took about 1/4 turn to snug up. I didnt loctite these but arent worried about them.

I really couldnt figure out how to adjust the chain and after a while I came down to the house and used the "real" search function for the board.

and found this: http://www.bimmer.info/forum/printthread.php?t=5936

just perfect! Thanks Ed & Bill R.

I'm going to bookmark the search link because after searching here forever with no luck, that search came up with the info I needed as the first link.

so wait, you need to take out the BOLT (not the nuts) and the hex adjuster is inside the hole?

what size hex do i need?

well it IS there, and it takes an 8mm hex key to adjust, turn clockwise to make it tighter.

bolt (with thread seal) and nuts (self locking) holding pump to engine tightening torque = 22Nm (use locktite)

nut holding sprocket to pump = 47Nm (use locktite)

remember to get new seals for the pump #17,15,14

#9 and 7 are SELF LOCKING and should only be used once
#8 is no longer required, now part of #9

I also replaced the pressure control piston assembley, #2-5..... thats a 3 person job to put the new one in. there was a LOT of gunk in there and it didnt wanna come out.

looks like someone was down there before. luckily the bolts on the pump were unnaturally tight, not going anywhere soon. I would think they only come loose when the pump to engine bolts are loose enough to cause unhealthy vibration.

oh, i should mention its BEFORE the contact threads, so its only about 1.5cm up there, at least on the M60

just about all m60/62s i drop the sump pan on have atleast one loose if not fallen out bolt, and some have been out so long the threads of the bolt have cut a pattern in the pan, we are starting to see missing/loose 10mm bolts that hold the pump together, that's a relitively new twist to a **** sandwedge
