This happens randomly, but it's quite puzzling.

Once and a while when I try to start the car, when the key hits the second position the tachometer goes nuts and starts to jump all over, and if this happens, the starter churns but does not fire... What the hell? It will start eentually, but sometimes it takes 10 times to try to get it to start, and it's really embarrasing...what the heck is wrong?

Seems to be in the ignition system since the tach is goofy. Have you checked for spark when this happens?
Could a bum crank pos. sensor do this??

Hmm, I don't think I can check for spark w/o tools yeah? I think it's mechanic time... *shoots self* *then bleeds on pocketbook*

Pull off a plug wire and see

sounds like a crank position sensor if its the tach needle.

Could someone find me a part number if possible, I need a quote from the stealer and other places just to see how much it may all cost if that really is the problem...
Thanks!

It could also be a fault within the ignition switch itself. E39's were know for it too.
