Just so I'm sure: 90 525i

Hello All,
Definitely a newb here. Problem: stuttering, especially in traffic and it's hot...check engine light came on a couple of times but I tried the Italian tune up...and no more light although the hesitation/clogged/stutter still exists. I've been on the BMWBOARD and someone suggested the idle control valve. I've also been told the Air Flow Meter (should I buy a reman?). Other possible demons: sparks/charcoal canister/oxygen sensor....where do I start. Before I have the mechanic start looking at the big ticket items (catalytic/afm) should I suggest to him these smaller fixes. Has anyone dealt with this same ailment? I'm not afraid of working on my car myself, but I commute pretty far and rarely have daylight. Any suggestions are helpful. I'm gathering as many opinions as possible....trust me I've been raked pretty awful in the past.

Thanks in Advance

hmm, i read somewhere that 93 was the first year that bmw started using a distributorless design, but it looks like it was 6/1990
