View Full Version : How many cars do you own

I never met a car I didn't like and too many of them follow me home.

I have been wrestling with the urge to add another car or two to our stable. For many years our 2 person family had 4 cars. I finally decided it was too difficult to keep them all maintenanced and it was stupid to pay insurance costs on cars we rarely drove, so we rotated the fleet and cut back to a total of 3.

When I was in Chicago, Bimmernut Ed was telling me that you can get a 3 year old 740 for about half of its original cost or a higher mileage 2 year old 740 for about half its original cost. This is because the type of person who buys a 7 is not the type of person who buys a used car so there is not much demand for the used ones. Ed's is pretty sweet and will be getting even more so after he puts the Bilstein sports on it to get rid of the boat effect. I started thinking, hmmm, boy would one of those be a nice extended family taxi.

And have you seen Bimmernut Eds fleet of BMWs? 5 cars (2 fives, 2 sevens, and a z3) and two cycles. That makes our prior four cars seem less excessive. (Never mind that he has 4 drivers in the family).

Ed's driveway

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h204/Chicage2006/108Small.jpg

And then there is the "makes me drool" gray X5 that belongs to someone at work which I hope to be the next owner of. I can feel the urge to buy more cars. I think it is seasonal. I have noticed there are a lot of people buying and selling now or at least wanting to.

Well, I admit, I have a problem. I acquire cars, yet can't seem to get rid of them. So right now I've got 3 sitting in the driveway until I get off my lazy butt and sell one of them.

Do other people here have the problem that Ed, Dan, and I have?

Gayle... Ed is right about the 7 series.

My parents bought thier 00' 740i for about $25k with 35,000 miles.

My parents bought thier 00' 740i for about $25k with 35,000 miles.

Ed has both a stretch one and a short one. I think you could fit a football team in the back seat of the stretch one. Ed tells me that most people but the stretch version and that the short ones are the rare version.

What do your parents have?

I think by stretch he is talking about the iL versions? And by short...the regular "i" versions.

If so, they have the short one. 740i

~Car in the middle obviously.

I count 4 cars out in my driveway now. 3 of them are mine and one is my girlfriend's. I'm a broke college student so why the hell I have 2 cars, I dont know. The BMW is by far the best. The other two I like to call DisposaHondas. There's a 92 Accord and an 88 Accord. The 92 looks like hell, but drives like a champ with only a 100k on it. The 88 looks great and drives great but has 300k mikes. I'm thinking of selling the 92 to make some upgrades to my 525. Well, there ya go....

oops . . . I may have skewed the data! (not that it will change things much.) i voted 3 as soon as i saw the poll, but one of those is a parts car (1969.5 citroen DS21). i have registered and on the road only one car (525 touring) and one truck (citroen h-van) so i suppose that's a bit greener, if less enthusiastic, than 3.

I had 3 up until 6 months ago, but the "disposahonda" died and was scrapped and crushed (they paid me $20 for it), I sold the 540, and the e46 is my daily driver.

May it rest in peace and God bless its determined little soul. Ode to disposahondas. What else would we do for a reliable $500 backup car?!

DanDombrowski
06-19-2006, 03:43 AM
Well, it seems that the people who have more than just one car usually have a disposahonda, which is what the Volvo is, although its not really disposable. The odometer stopped at 170k miles, and that was 4 years ago.

Whenever anything happens to any of our cars, My mother, sister, girlfriend, Dad, Dad's wife, and I can all drive the Volvo. Saves a TON of money on rental cars (and rental coverage on the insurance). Split up over that many people, it makes sense to keep an extra car. On top of that, the Volvo is what I use to tow my boat and take our 3 monsters to the dog park.

So technically, including my GFs camry, we have 4 cars. But once the E34 is sold and since the Volvo is shared amongst many, its really only 2. At least thats the way I justify it.

Well I have one, but I maintain 3, so I feel better about it. I'd love to live in the US! Its okay to have 2 cars each there. In europe its bad having one. (as it should be I guess)

Gayle, I love 7s too, but there is no reason to get one- they weigh a lot more than a 5, they don't handle as well, use more tyres and things cost more. Inside they look like they are for fat businessmen and not feisty freaulines! The sharp black interior of the 5 might be familiar to you but when you lounge around in a 7 you can see why the suspension is not as taut as it is in the 5.

Having said this I love the exterior design of the e32- I feel the e38 is not as sharp aesethically but then again nice rims can fix anything. The stretch version is not nippy enough in corners, or easy enough to park. Just ask Erich- I imagine they fit 3 cars in his spot in Tokyo as soon as he's gone home.

But the pricing one can't argue with. Noone wants an old limo.

But maybe that is cos it uses too mouch gas!

I think you are just looking for a change. A turbo might be a brighter idea ;), and or an S38 conversion or change to an M5 maybe.

But why not go the whole hog with yours? Something like B10 single or bi-turbo spec is the next step as your 535 is a great example of the e34- perhaps it is worth the upgrade!

If you wanted to be one of a kind you could just go S38+twin turbo; I don't think one exists yet and that is the Schnitzer/factory race spec from the CSL days. It would have to be the maddest and strongest L6 you could get, especially as these days the ECU (http://www.megasquirt.org) to run such a setup doesn't have to cost more than the car. :) Nick

I voted two. Although I'm really jonesing for a cooper and a friends '87 533 5-spd. I've pretty much decided that if my insurance company totals my e34, I'm walking up his drive with the check.

Better than the Jeep, but don't waste your time.
Drive an X5 and you will never want to drive any other SUV.
If off-road ability & low range are required, look at a Discovery series 3 or even the just superseded W163 M class. Both have 7 seats.
The new Merc is apparently better off road but only has 5 seats.
There is also a new X5 due out any time which is a 7 seater - should be the ants pants.

I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that I may incriminate myself as a completely insane person. :)

Let's just say this- in the past 3 days I have purchased 2 cars, a '94 325i (wrecked in the right rear door) and a '95 318iA (not wrecked, but "blowed up sir!!")...... But, I also sold one car.......granted it was not even my car, and it was not even a BMW- it was an old POS Mazda that I sold on behalf of my Sister-in-law's father.

only two, well i have the 535 and Mary (wife) has a Daihatsu Sirion. She works right in the city,so its perfect little shopping/parking cart. The thing uses half the petrol of the 5 and with no weight and a 1.3 with varaible valve timing is surprisingly driveable. Its too small for me.As a hatch its also has more room for large boxes etc

Four of those cars are gone, and a couple others have swapped around, leaving us with 5 cars if I'm at home, for 4 drivers.

Can't wait to get a second car, with a manual. Love the 5: the V8, the seats, high speed handling, the sound... but when I'm going to school at 9am, by myself, sitting in traffic, for an hour, wathcin the mpg needle, it's painful :( 80% of the time I ride the bus. An E30 would be pefect, or a Mk1 GTI,... :)

White/blue one runs great, not much is stock on itWhich is the only reason it ran great.....what about the Cressida. I would rock that all day. Same engine as the supra *processing....processing*; straight six, turbo, stick, all Toyota parts = yummy. Talk about a sleeper.

ME? Just look down *grin*.
Jerry's in storage, not to see snow/salt/weather clueless drivers.
Helga's in final prep for sale.
This leaves 3, which is just right for 2 drivers...........considering the age of the whips. Equiped with snows over the past couple of days too *whew* still a little sore. Rolf is parked tho, winter tires toast, not quite slick at one end...but close. Carla & Thor's knobby (for her pleasure) rubber is quite fresh , Kelly and me both made it to work today....on time.

But seriously, two daily drivers that get decent mileage and a backup/major item hauler are required. A car is the only way either of us can make it to work.
When it's nice out the MR2 is a very practical toy, it can almost crack 30mpg. And Kelly can still rock the t-topped Nissan if she's feels like a sportier ride. That little beater doesn't look so hot, but the noise it makes runnin up to the 7800rpm redline...........orgasmic. 1st gear is just a tease, 2nd it stretches out a bit. The Toyota isn't quiet, but it's more buzzy not really a rich tone. Got some major grunt when the cams switch over tho, that's what counts.
Desperately want to chip the 3er, just to raise the fuel cut. I love the Supersprint; frees up a few hp and sounds great, very subtle for an aftermarket unit too.
Thor?
3 inch straight pipe, cat, no other muffling (besides a bit from the snail). Think big 4 banger turbo muscle car......

”Hang up & Drive!"
94 BMW 530iT&A 133K, ‘Helga’ ( for sale *sniff* )

First:
-93 GMC Sierra 5.7L- TOTALED
94 Chevy Silverado 4.3L
67 Chevy Malibu 6.3L-Needs new tranny
61 VW Beetle 1.3L-Sitting, waiting to become a dune buggy
94 BMW 530i

I have paid for all of them on my own except the 67 Malibu, Which my father gave to me the day I graduated from High School. (He gave my brother a guitar :D)

hey hey be nice to the Fiats :p

The Cressida was my first car, it was awesome. Non-Turbo version of the Supra engine....The headgasket went on it (kinda common at ~80,000 miles for the 7M-GE).....It was sold with that problem known & I have seen it running around town recently, so it must have received a new head gasket at some point.
