Wow, at Walmart in Germany Mobil 1 10w30 syn oil is ~50 Euros for 4 Litres!! That's like $70 CAD. I love my BMW, but if I lived here at that price I'd cut it with a bit of canola before dropping it in.

if you lived in BMWland i don't think you'd waste your time on crap like Mobil 1

...... you'd be using something like: Lubro Moly Voll-Synthese ;)

I just switched to Motul 8100 X-cess 5W40 (cost $90 CAD including labour and the filter).

Canadian Tire sells Mobil 1 0w40 for 8.99 CAD (if you can get it)

I also just put Redline in the tranny and diffs in my e46... very smooth.

looks like assimilation has reached Deutschland ----> a Walmart in Germany?!? ... the horror! :(

i wish they'd sell the good '$hit' in the Walmart's in North America, the good '$hit' being Amsoil baby!!

Amsoil 2000 Series: 20W50 during the summer months & 0W30 during the winter months ........

...... loooooooong drain intervals!!!

yup, and change your oil filter a couple of times during the year and keep her topped up ...... and just do one annual oil change...

in my neck of the woods, during the cold snaps, i sometimes detect fuel dilution (i.e., when it dips to < -30 degrees C)...

i used to run a K&N air filter and noticed that the silica concentration increased in the oil (cuz' of the dust getting sucked through the filter and into the motor; ultra fine sand --- quartz, which is ultra abrasive) :( ...... when i switched back to a stock filter the problem went away.

Who's doing the spectra analysis on your oil to find silica contamination. Mobile 1 0w40 is about $7.00 a quart (946 mL).

I got very lucky this week and was able to cherry-pick about 5 dozen litres of various synthetic oils out of a local liquidation-world type clearance place. $CAD 4/litre for Castrol Syntec, Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, Pennzoil Platinum and Havoline Synthetic - all are full synthetics. Mostly 5W-30 and 10W-30, with a few litres of 0W-20, 5W-40 and 5W-50 here and there. I also picked up a full change worth of Valvoline VR1 20W-50 so that might be fun to try for a short time (fewer detergents in race oil so I wouldn't leave it in there for long). Redline SI-1 injector cleaner was $CAD 4.95/bottle so I picked up a half dozen of those as well.

I think there's enough oil to do two full changes on each manufacturer/grade with a few rogue litres left over of this and that here and there. Maybe I'll use the rogue litres to do a couple of witches'-brew oil changes on the GTI.

I'll try to remember to post results over the next few oil changes about impressions of each.

Enjoy!

I would use higher high temp viscosity oil in the V8.

if you do decide to go with GC, pour 2 bottles of lubro moly MoS2 treatment in there to reduce the operating friction and provide metal protection incase the 30wt film strength isnt high enough.
