Anybody know if $980.00 sounds right to have both mortor mounts replaced on the E34 540?JUst got the car back from the local BMW Dealer and they said they both need to be replaced, one is leaking... I didn't know they weren't solid. They quoted me the above figure. Is that really accurate?I say they quoted me though i in fact just picked up the car after the service reps ahd gone and all i have it the paperwork. Anyway i was really able to open it up for the first time taking a nice long onramp curve. Insane :)

It'll take a whole bunch of extensions and universals to get them replaced without a human sacrific.

540 Mounts are about $150 a pair.
Shop rate around here is around $80 an hour.
I dont think it takes 8-10 hours to swap out mounts.

the motor brackets and the subframe.

You do one side at a time, gently jacking the motor up as you remove all nuts from the mounts.

The only thing is the V8 takes some finesse, because the nuts are not easily reached from the top

its easy. i did them from the bottom. there is no need to go from the top. it takes an hour and a half to do both and I am not a mechanic. $984 or whatever it is is a load of ****. please have a go yourself it really is not hard and it would give you an oppurtunity to get familiar with your car. there are going to be other things in the future to do and if u dont start learning to do simple things like this its going to cost u a heap.

These take an hour. I did a set last week, along with a lower pan gasket and belts, billed it at 1.5 hours, or $127.50. Find a good place to get work done on the car.

Best, whit

I also have a V8 and paid about $110 for both mounts from BMA parts and did them myself.
I also have little mechanical experience and just went in there and figured it out. With many extensions and u-joints they were done in a few hours. Just slowly jack up the engine and watch the fan blades to keep them from hitting the shroud.

As other pros and DIYers have said, this is not that difficult a job. I did mine a little differently than Mattyb but still went at it from the bottom end and it took about 90 minutes. I just had regular tools available and had to break loose and tighten from the top end but I did attach my sockets from underneath. Here is how I did mine:

Order them from BMA or Autohausaz and do it yourself! Like others have said, you will learn your car this way and save $$ for more important things - like mods.

It was 1000 bucks for me parts and labor at the dealer. Although it took the little guy 3 days to do it. Seems techs don't help each other out at the dealer. Anyhow, I'd go BMW indy for that work. Labor is a killer.
