Some Questions for auto tranny guru's...

Have done a quick search, but need some answers!!

Firstly, What tranny do I have in my car ? It is a build date 11/89, 525i and it has a 4 speed auto with no sports/manual/econ select button.

Secondly, if I upgrade this to a newer tranny, with the electronic selects, what other components will I have to change.

Last of all, it seems to be taking longer to change into 4th gear. Is this a sign it needs a service, or is it on the way out??

Uh, if the car has an M20 as all US '90 525s have, the trans is a Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen (ZF -- I'm the only duji who actually spells it out) 4hp-22.

It wouldn't be worth converting to an electronically controlled 4hp -- the needed wiring is integrated with the car's body and engine harnesses, and since no M20 powered car that I can think of came with an electronically controlled 4hp from the factory, you'll have to write the book on it.

Could be anything, but filter and fluid (level and quality) can tell and do a lot.
