View Full Version : for most e36 owners with abs problems

the abs pumps internal wiring sucks balls but if you are GOOD with a soldering iron you can fix it for a few bucks, when you start getting codes for valves in the pump the wiring is shot, when i say wiring i am being generous this crap is basicly some foil and plastic laminated together, which is the problem, a while back i figured out how to rewire it with real wire and have since done a **** load of them and even supply a couple shops with them

i use 22 gauge solid insulated copper wire avalable at radio shack and most electornics supply places, stranded wire works but is harder to run in the small space you have to work in, get two different colors to keep it simple and a couple foot of each should be more then enough, i run all of the solenoid wires leaving them a little long then connect them all to the plug at the same time, this is not a repare for those who haven't mastered soldering

i forgot to mention the cover is held on usually with #40 torx and the plug slides out when you get the cover off, you do need to remove the pump from the car

I hope I don't have to do this anytime soon. I did swap in new plugs & change the oil yesterday, on the e36. BMW really is chincing out from the e34; there isn't much of a tool box in the e36's trunk. There is no spark plug tool, but deep sockets work fine.

haha, this little write up woulda been useful two weekends ago when I helped solder my friends abs pump...we just got one good working one from a junker, took it apart and started building his back up...it works now so its all good

Erich, I got the car scanned with a snap on modius scanner and it came up with (FR inlet valve) fault code showing. Winfred said to me that his wiring diagram would fix the problem. My abs light on the e36 is on all the time.


I got a question on this on the other board I posted it.

On the RHD car, the Master clyinder is on the right hand side, but the hydro unit is not underneath it. Its on the left hand side. I will post pics tommorrow on how to remove it/get to it. I assume there are brake lines that I need to disconnect.

that is the type of code you get when the tin foil harness looses contact with the solenoids, so yes most likely this will fix it

a few brake lines and a big round plug, ill try to remember to bring my camera tomorrow and take a few pics of the unit

this is the crappy foil harness that you need to remove all of the little bits of, suck or blow away the solder and get the little end pieces of the foil thing off of the pins

Wow, thanks very much for the photos Winfred, they helped a great deal. On the RHD version you can see were the ABS pump is located.

- I assume there are 5 lines to remove - in your photos you have them plugged with a red plug. Two up the top (on either side) and 3 on the bottom, besides the electrical connector- does anything else have to be removed?
- When you remove the ABS pump do the brake lines need to be plugged?
- Should the brake system be blead to remove air?
- Does the fault code go away automatically when it is rewired, or does it have to be cleared.

that's where the pump is on our cars it just has a master cylinder hanging over top of it over here, the lines, plug and a couple 13mms should be all you need to remove, if you have something to plug the 2 lines coming from the master cylinder it won't piss fluid all over while you have the pump off but it's not requiered, you need to bleed the system and you need to clear the fault code

Yo Winfred. I took my mum's car to the garage again today and them clear all fault codes. The fault code for "FR inlet valve" was cleared but then there was another fault code that couldn't be cleared it said "Fuse valve load circuit" on the Snapon Modius scanner. Do you know what this means?

never seen that one, see if the modis has anything about that in it's database

ps you did connect #2 to #7 like i showed on the diagram?!, i can't remember the code that that kicked up on the first one i did
