Intersting story. Someone from Norway called at the E32 bimmerboard for help. He had installed in his semi racer E30 an M70 V12 and a manual gear from an 850 CSI and could not get the power with more than 3.000 RPM, accdg to him maybe only 120 HP at 6.000 RPM.
Problem was that he changed from the automatic transmission to the manual one and there were some signals missing now from trans to ECU's/EML, I assumed.
Checked with my friends in Germany to solve the electronic problems and now the car should hopefully be ready to race in 4 weeks at the Nurburgring in Germany.

I hope the pipes he has wrapped are able to withstand added heat. I heard a story of someone's exhaust having melted because of the wrap while racing...

LOL ignore my post - its called heat tape, it causes no issues. We run it on turbo manifolds that get up to 1600 degrees F

That's insane! Tight fit, but it looks good.

Crazy! My buddy wanted to put a V12 in my M3. The idea still lingers in the back of my head but my better sense tells me it's just a bad idea. ;)

I copied this for you:

Oh yeah! It's working
The enginge is a spectacular power source in a car like this.
To give you a hint of what this kind of engine does with an E30:
0-100km/h is a mere 5,1 seconds - from SECOND gear!!!!
0-150km/h (still from second - 1. is waste of time and tyres) goes by in 9,3 seconds. I'll be back with more info on times when tha car ha got proper racing tyres on and the wheel angles are accurately adjusted.

Anyway, I would like to thank you guys - and especially Shogun - so very much. I could not have done this without you. I am very impressed by this community and will spread the word to friends all around

A couple of pictures from the days test run - car is very dirty and camera very simple...

The other E30 is my friends racer with a V8 in it

Well, he thanks me especially. But actually I just coordinated things worldwide. My friend in Germany is electronic engineer and E32 750 V12 crazy. What he does not know about this engine and it's electronics, probably no one knows.

To make it easier, here I have added the other pics

Getrag 286, called the S6S 560G by BMW. Largest and heaviest manual trans used in a BMW, we had one mashed by UPS last month. 850i/850csi use the same transmission, I can't think of anything else that uses it with that particular bellhousing -- E34 M5 3.8/6 have the same designation, different front half of the case, but don't know if the gearing is the same.

That car is sweet! Looks like it has late E31 front calipers to me. He was probably all set with the subframe after installing the M30, but I wonder if he had to do anything with the steering rack for the M70. Also, it seems to me that an E30/2 with zero interior, race get-up, and an M70 should hit 100km/h in less than 5. Maybe the engine is a rebuild and he's being gentle (ha ha)?

best, whit

I think the same Getrag was also used in the E38 740 with 6-speed manual.
ZF does or did not have a manual gear at that time to wiithstand these forces.
I was told recently by a friend in GETRAG.

whit, with the zero-to 100 time:

That was the first time the car with this engine was running. So I think he was driving very careful, and he also mentioned:

I'll be back with more info on times when the car ha got proper racing tyres on and the wheel angles are accurately adjusted.

wow that is sick. I wonder how it will corner and how the weight distribution will be with that huge engine up there though.

thats an awesome suspension set up. no gap at all, but well the weight in front helps out just a tad

He said, -quote-

I'm NOT going to put any more money into this engine before I know how the car handles. Even though the engine is very far back into the engine room (firewall has been wildly modified), I cannot be sure before I put the car on serious testing - on track.

Next season the whole engine will be revised with EVERYTHING possible. Different piston, rods, dry sump, modified heads, cams, individual throttle bodies, carbon airboxes and so on. Oh, and a new ECU is of course planned in the same conversion.

But first, as I said, it needs to be tested on track...

A very good friend of mine has the M60B40 in his E30. That's also a pure race car. Beautifully balanced and goes like stink:)

The same guy has even built another E30 with a Kawasaki engine:) 800kg WITH driver. The engine only weighs 70kg. 180HP. A very good track car.
