Lately, I have been having problems shifting the old 5er out of park in the morning. After some time and a little finagling, it finally shifts. Can anyone lend a little insight?? Thanks in advance.

the problem may be the shift interlock. listen carefuly for the tick sound when you depress the brake pedal in park coming from the base of the shifter. It may just have morning sickness, or the shifter may be slightly out of adjustment placing some tension onthe interlock preventing it from releasing.

Do you park the car on an incline or decline? Maybe you are having to over come the parking pawl by using extra force on the shifter.

I live in So Cal. Lately, I have been parking either on the street or in the driveway because I am rearranging the garage. It has happened in both places so I don't think the incline is the problem. Should I be worried about something big (i.e. transmission, etc.?? Any fixes in mind??

Yes, start with verifying the interlock functions properly, could be someting as simple as a bad brake switch.

Yeah, try applying the handbrake before putting the car in park to see if that helps the next morning.

Always apply the handbrake firmly before putting the car in park.
