View Full Version : what are you guys getting for MPG in your 525i?

On the highway, I can get no more than 400 miles FLAT out of my 1995 525i. Is that pretty low? It translates to around 20 miles per gallon.

What could cause poor gas mileage? I know there is a rip in the air filter.

I just took a road trip over the weekend from Pittsburgh, PA to Washington, DC and back. I reset everything when I started and AVG 1 was 27 MPG and AVG 2 was 23 MPG. My average on the highway was about 75 MPH. I thought that was pretty good. Although, I don't know what the difference between the two are. Does anyone know?

Are you askig what the difference between Consumption 1 (Mpg 1) and Consumption 2 (Mpg 2)? If so, they do the same thing. Having two allows you to keep a long-term average going, while still allowing you to track mileage over shorter trips. Why yours are different IF you reset both before your trip to Tittsburgh is beyond me. You have to hit the button to show Mpg 1, press reset, hit the button again to get Mpg 2, then hit reset again (if you want them both to record the same trip stats.

As for your mileage, 27 Mpg sounds good for reasonable highway speeds. When I watch my foot and flow with traffic, I’ll get 28-30+ Mpg.

cruising around 80mph, no significant wind, or weather, AC off, relativly level terrain, not too much traffic, i can get a little over 500 miles out of my 95 525. and thats running ethanol enriched fuel which increases consumption (screws mpg)

no traffic, open roads 20 to 24 MPG

Heavy rush hour traffic with the A/C on 18.7

and thats with the E 10 stuff.

... doing 80mph it's down around 24mpg (gets into vanos RPM range)

... doing around 70mph its around 26-28mpg...

... doing 55-60mph it's around 30-32mpg...

around town about 22-23mpg if I'm easy on it...

i used to get about 450 miles to a tank for highway driving in my '93 525. i'd always set the cruise control to try and get the best mpg for the speed, ~85mph...

but it's now getting a bazillion mpg, up there in e34 heaven somewhere.

22-24 mixed driving (70% highway (70@highway), 30% traffic). If pure highway 27-29 if I have a light foot and keep it below 70. In heavy stop and go, as low as 11-12. Most of the time, I get 15-16 in town. Always varies depending on season.

My 92 with an M50 5 speed gets an average of 24MPG (calculated the old fashion way) The OBC indicates 23.6MPG .. 80% highway, 10% city, and 10% driven hard .. This Bimmer is certanly more fun to drive than my 3cyl Metro was.

how much does the EAT chip affect mpg???

I get about 370 per tank with winter fuel and 400 for summer fuel. big difference.

Is your fuel only 92 ron? We have much better fuel over here hence better power and chips like your EAT chip wont do much. I get 20ish MPG out my 535is man and only max of 320 miles on 80 litre tank.

320 miles (@529 km) on 80L = @ 15L/100km or @ 15Mpg.

I'm confused by your #s / rationale. If fuel in the UK is much better, I'd expect better mileage. I'll get between 700km / 440 miles (city) to 1000+ km / 620 miles (pure highway) on 80L.

I'd have to drive backwards up a hill for half a tank to hit 15 Mpg ;)

Maybe we could ask RON?

How do I work out my MPG? I think it's quite low. :(

I assume you don't have the OBC with consumption etc.

Anyhow, fill er up (80L = @ 21 U.S. gall). Drive it till the fuel light illuminates. Depending on driving style, you should have @ 10L / 2.5 gall remaining). Now go fill up again and record what you put in and what your trip odometer says. We'll use 70L and 700km for example.

Therefore you've used 70L for 700km, which equals 10L / 100km OR @ 24 Mpg.

Voila

Oh okay. Well I know putting in 20 liters of fuel in, it gets me about 250Km I'd say. Maybe a little less. Next time I fill it up I will reset the trip meter and see how far it goes till the red light comes on again. No my OBC doesn't show MPG. Just Temp, Clock, Date, and Memo. Whatever that does.

Are there different size gas tanks on different model years. I have a 92 and I only have a 17 gal tank. I saw that someone mentioned 21 gal tank.

We've been getting 22-24 mpg

and with gas prices at $3/gallon in Michigan, we are doing anything to save gas . . .

So I have this buddy, who used to be *big* into network marketing. When he was 21 he driving around the country in an S500 on speaking tours. He called me the other day and pounded on me about the next big network marketing opportunity: gas pills.

I was pretty much going to say 'no' but my wife wanted to try the business out (yes the business, not the product), so I signed up under the cheapest 'manager' plan: $200 and that includes 4 bottles of product (40 pills each or 20% more in powder: one pill treats 8 gallons). The company is called Bioperformance and here (http://zale.mybpbiz.com) is the link to my page on the company website. I ordered the product April 23 and still haven't received it. I assume that is because they are hoping you will sign up more friends before you find out the product is worthless. Fortunately, they have a "will not damage your engine or we will fix it" guarantee.

Just for the record, I think network marketing *can* work but 98% of the time, people are just making money off weak people looking to get rich quick. I don't think this company is much different. I listened to 2 conference calls and they both focus on the same thing: what you can buy with the money you will make in this business; it's so predatory it makes me sick . . . but I digress.

That said, I probably will get this product soon. I will have 192 'servings', good for 1536 gallons (or 30k miles at 20mpg). Needless to say, I have more than I need, so you guys are welcome to a free sample if you dare. PM me your address and I will send you a baggy of powder when it arrives. Just don't tell the cops that I'm your dealer.

My buddy sent some product to me to try it out and it hasn't worked yet, but we are only on the second tank of the stuff and I have encouraged my wife to drive a little harder than usual (just to make sure she isn't driving more conservatively than usual).

There's an 80L plastic tank, available in Europe, and an 81L metal tank, available everywhere else. Not sure where the 17 gallon one would come into play.

By the way, my 318is has a 55L tank (14.5 gallons) and I routinely get 25 city, 31 highway in that car!

Bioperformance Gas pills?! Ha!! These are the best (http://www.beanogas.com/)bio gas pills around, man!

I get 19.7-20.2 on the OBC since I started easing up on the green light starts. The avg OBC MPH for that is 28.9 MPH, and is comprised on 2/3 start/stop on 40 MPH roads and one 5 mile tollway stretch at 70MPH.

All pyramid sales are worthless scams. Some guy tried to get me to join. He told me he liked my work ethics and 'had a great business oppurtunity' for me. We met for coffee and he explained the entire thing to me. At first it sounded great but with a night's worth of thought and some discussion with my dad, I decided that it wasn't worth it, just a waste of money.

Anyways for better fuel economy, you could try new fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs do a search on the board or on the net.

So I checked out the owners manual and I do have a 21 gal fuel tank. I guess I've always filled up as soon as the low fuel indicator light comes on. Supposedly there's still 2 1/2 gallons of fuel left in tank (reserve).

i asked what your driving terrain was like to see if we could make a relevant comparison here....

my highest on eat chip: 35.5-36 @55-57 mph, 50% hills, 50% level, over 102 miles.

practical trip: orlando FL to toronto, ON, CAN, 14xx miles in 19 hours (ie--fast continuous), 2 people, significant luggage, about 31 or so. return--(I told my sister that whatever she does, she needs to get past atlanta before 430pm. so, of course, i woke up to see us sitting in atlanta traffic @5) about 28.

the chip and any flavor of the m50 motor are a necessary combination. you'd have to delude yourself to believe that its ok to drive on 87 because you have a knock sensor but still know that you have a 10.5-1 compression motor. if one is going to be using premium anyways....may as well chip. mr d'sylvas chip seems to break the 25 mpg plateau i seemed to be stuck at in the car on the highway prior to the chip.

Ooooooooooooops, azale...

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's office has filed a lawsuit against an Irving company it says was selling fake gas pills in a pyramid scheme. Abbott's office has obtained a temporary restraining order and asset freeze against BioPerformance Inc. (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22BioPerformance%20Inc%22&t=dallas)

Abbott says the company, its President and owner Lowell Mims and co-owner Gustavo Romero advertise nationally via the Internet and through seminars in Texas and other states, claiming the gasoline pills and powders can increase fuel efficiency by 30 percent or more and cut harmful emissions by up to 50 percent.

But Abbott says scientists who tested the pills at the University of Texas at Austin and at a Florida university found that pills are mainly naphthalene, a chemical found in mothballs.

BioPerformance could not be reached Wednesday because the number for the business was disconnected.

I couldn't have been any more surprised if I woke up tomorrow with my head stapled to the carpet . . . oh wait, no. I wasn't surprised.

I go away for one week to Disney World, the place where dreams come true, and when I return, all my hopes and dreams of being a multibillionaire through the 'magic' of network marketing were dashed in pieces. Needless to say, I still haven't received the product I paid for.

I still have some pills that my buddy gave me. I haven't noticed a big increase in MPG in my Rover but I haven't seen a moth in that truck since I put that poorly designed bottle in the back :) . In other news, the mothball smell has completely overpowered the smoke smell that came with the truck. And no, that is not an added benefit.

Doing mostly local jaunts of 12 miles or so with the odd 60 mile freeway trip and mostly small town driving the touring has averaged a mathematically figured 23.679mpg over the last 3173 miles. Normal loaded weight on the truck scales is around 4250#. EAT chip and premium gas. Premium is and has been $0.20/gallon more expensive than regular. Makes me feel better and better about using premium as the difference in cost goes from 10% to 6% and shrinking as gas gets more expensive while the regular/premium price difference remains the same.
