I've tried before to remove the panel under the steering wheel to access the brake switch and other things, but I've never been able to do it because of the HVAC conduits in there. I can never seem to seperate them from the panel, so I can never pull the panel away.

Is there a trick to it or something?

at each end, once screws and release knobs are undone from the lower panel.

The Knee bolster removal requires the two trim plates removed to access the upper trim screws, then unbolt the knee crash pad.

now you can almost see the brake switch.

It is a bitch to do, I ripped a pair of jeans, broke a flashlight in half because of anger, and threw a few choice words down when the HVAC vents wouldn't go in place, but I eventually did it. Make sure you get the 2 screws next to the radio.

The Knee bolster removal requires the two trim plates

Where are those trim plates, exactly?

Thanks a lot.

Oh, so if I pull off those wood pieces there are screwheads hidden under them?

Yep - just gently pry them off. I think the Bentley book may even mention this.
