You should make a nonfunctionable iDrive knob to finish the job off.

Jon K

I thought about it - really i did. wouldn't take that much effort to make it functional.

Augh! All those crimp connectors... Where is the old tried and true? Twist, solder and shrink tube? I know I know... takes too long.

Jon K

I have no problem soldering believe me - the wire wouldn't take solder. It's some sort of nickel wire or something and the solder would just bead right off.

Damn.. I don't remember seeing this one.. I think I saw a picture from before Jon, when you hadn't put all the nice trim on.. This actually looks pretty good..

What function do the two knobs have? i.e. which of the stock knobs do these replace, or are there any combined into one etc. ?

Jon,

I'm new to bimmer.info, but have hung out at bimmerforums for a couple years. I dug up this thread after seeing your "turbo" video. I'm planning to do a Car PC in my 90 525, and I have a million questions.

The most relevant here would be related to the climate control. I noticed that you have 2 knobs next to your screen. I assume you linked the two temp controls and did away with the dual zone feature. And I saw the A/C, Rear Defrost, and Recirc controls on the dash, but how do you adjust the airflow between defrost vents, dash vents, and floor? And if you did away with those controls, how do you set the system to defrost?

I'm curious as to what mobo, cpu, and monitor brands you're running, but that's less important now.

Do you plan to integrate an OBD scanner w/ your system? I'd like to, but am having trouble finding anything compatible with OBD-I. Are they supposed to be backward compatible? If so, I feel very stupid.

Nice job on the car all around!
