View Full Version : Preemptive car for sale thread - 1990 E34 535i 5 speed

Hey guys, my car will be officially for sale when I finish this school term in late May/Early June... just thought I would see if there is any interest among the E34 enthusiasts before I really post it up for sale. My ma's helping me get into something new - probably going to be a compact pickup of some sort - and I just don't have the need for two cars.

It's a 135k mile (at the moment) 1990 BMW 535i 5 speed - Black on Grey leather with full option: sunroof, heated seats, and LSD.

It's got a few mods done to it: OEM euro clears all around, EAT 7k RPM redline chip, Sachs suspension kit with only a few thousand miles on it... more that I probably can't think of at the moment (nothing big though).

The wheels aren't stock, they are 15s though with Michelin Pilots of some flavor (can't remember at the moment) that only have a few thousand miles on them (swapped on the same time as the Sachs kit). Exhaust isn't stock, it's a single straight pipe going all the way back connected to an el cheapo muffler that's tided me over quite nicely... better low end response than stock and quieter to boot, although the muffler admittedly looks very awkward on the car.

It's not a perfect car by any stretch, but it's definitely not a dime a dozen E34 either. Just thought I'd post this as a feeler for now, very brief description to give you guys an idea... I will become more serious when the time rolls around to go shopping for something new.

Looking to get $4k for the thing, if you feel this is a car you will be interested in buying feel free to drop a reply in this thread and I will try to work something out with you.

Some somewhat recent pics I took:

Eh yeah they aren't great pics or anything but I still need the car until school is out... not officially for sale just yet and there will be better pics when it is.

Mostly just looking to see if there is any interest at the moment.

Damn, that seems like a really good deal. 5sp, LSD, Sachs kit,... that car has a lot going for it.

Mate, the muffler kills it. Try to find a good second hand stock unit, it'll look better.

That exhuast looks like you retrofitted a 1.8l m44 and sized the exuast to fit. At least have an exhaust shop do something with the back end. Y tip - slash cut, slash cut 3" single pipe, get a Monza tip from summit racing

Please don't do a Monza tip. That will look even worse. For $50 you could find a dual stainless straight cut tip and have it welded on, because it does somewhat look bad. Nice car otherwise, for $4k it should sell quick. I second the better picture comment, then also post on Bf.c, Pelican, and Craigslist. You might be able to unload it without even paying for an ad.

As for the truck, get a Toyota. Not that you asked. And if you ever want to sell the euro tails seperate, let me know.:D

Assuming the base is tucked up near the muffler - How does a Monza style tip differ from the OEM BMW look ?

I think the slashed tip looks bad, like the dual exhaust on a Chevy truck. Plus the red or yellow inside just looks tacky.

This is disappointing, Chach.

Guys, I know the exhaust is fugly, but it gets me around just fine and that's really all that matters to me... Sean do you understand why I'm selling this car? Besides the fact that my mom is willing to help me pay for something new?

You can't haul a trackbike in an E34, you can't toss a bunch of crap in its bed and go camping, and you certainly can't take one to your local stealer and get it worked on for free (my mom's selling point, she hates seeing me doing maintenance everytime I come home from school).

I'd keep the E34 if I was in love with it, but frankly I'm not. It was a great car for its time but what I really need now is a truck I can drive til I die, and maybe... just maybe... my next car will be an E34 with an ls1 under the hood. But most likely not, as I've pretty much grown out of the "fast street car" stage in my life.

The factory tips are basically a slash cut. Plus- the orange or yellow only last about 60 miles - then it gets carbon covered.

To me its the easiest way to get something that looks OEM with out a lot of $$

Didn't you used to have a sig pic that was taken from above looked down on your car sorta from the rear corner? If that was your car, I thought it was one of the best looking cars on the forum.

Definitely a bargain at the price your selling for. If I lived near you, I would sell my car and buy yours.

Possibly? Although I don't really have any pictures like that? :)

These are probably the closest I've got to a rear shot I might've used for a sig...

Love that exhaust!!

Put a 520 badge on it and you'll have a nice Q car....

Is $4k the going rate for one of these in the US? Here in the UK e34's, especialy 535's, make no money at all. Have a look on ebay.co.uk. They barely make more than a few hundred £

Hmm... looked and saw a few auctions for a few hundred £, hardly anything concrete though.

As far as I know, $4k is about the cheapest you can find an E34 535i 5 speed in the US, if you can even find one that is... and both the E34 535i examples on the UK Ebay site are autos.

4K is a very good price here for a manual in good nick. And a 3.5 isn't really considered a 'big' engine here, so it doesn't get hit by depreciation very hard.

Okay - you still want a fast car, just a track one. You had me worried. :)

Eh... close. Got tired of street riding, sold my old bike, picked up a track bike.

I don't really care for spirited street driving at all, there's no such thing if you want to be a responsible person IMO. Given that I can get a lot of use out of a pickup if I was to get a new car, it's topping my list.

The 2006 GTi is always in the back of my head after driving one but I know I could never pull the trigger on that car, I'd be kicking myself for years to come paying for that compromise of a car when I could just have a reliable pickup and a medium to haul stuff for trackdays and the like. Keep the pickup forever, perhaps get a sporty car in the way future... :D

Damn, wish my 535i 5-spd had all that **** done to it and was $4k...

I paid $5k and so far have replaced the water pump, front end, added clears etc.

Sachs kit is definitely a key selling point. Helluva deal here, especially black on grey.

JAlfredPrufrock

MPower... seriously man, I know mods don't necessarily increase the value of the car but I thought someone would jump all on this for $4k and make my life easy at the earliest possible time I could get rid of the car.

I'm probably going to at least part the clears now that I think about it, if not the EAT chip and a BavAuto chip I have laying around for it too.

Any interest in either of those things?

OK so it looks like the car is actually going to be for sale...

Fan clutch went out on me this week so that is something that needs fixing, other than that it's a solid car.

I'm negotiable on the price... need any pics and I will be glad to provide.

I like your name :) Do you read much of T.S. Eliot's work?
