Will the "stomp test" work on an 1989 535i? I thought I read somewhere that a bulb was missing or something of that nature and would not display the codes? Is it not even equipped with the stomp test? Any idea?

i have an 89 535i and the stomp test works.
It probably depends on the date of manufacture, i'm sure someone else will have a more detailed explanation.

Also, how do I know that it works, like where do the codes show up at? And if no codes show I'm assuming that there are no problems, right?

The codes will show up as flashes of the check engine light, like morse code.

As you can see I am a newbie at these sort of things, how do you know which code is which? I see the light blinking but how do I know that the code is, for example 1224?

The light will blink twice and then start showing codes.
a code of 1224 would be
1 quick blink....pause.....2 quick blinks.....pause 2 quick blinks.....pause 4 quick blinks. keep reading the codes until it repeats the first one again.
It's easiest to make slash marks as it blinks the codes and then figure out what they are after. example 1224 would be | || || |||| the spaces in between being the pauses.
