View Full Version : braking shimmy

My 1995 525i has pretty new front discs and pads (5000 miles) to cure pulsating braking. Cure worked fine but now it's back. The wrinkle, if you brake lightly, shimmy, but if you brake harder shimmy stops. Is this indicative of worn dogbones or some other front end componant? Car has 97,000 miles total, new-ish 225/65 15 Kumho tires.

Thanks in advance

John

When you are braking, does the car pull to either side?

When my dogbones went, I could feel it in the rear end, mostly in/out of turns...kind of a sloppy feeling. But not in the brakes.

Noboby likes a sloppy rear end

I just went thru that a few weeks ago with my e32 (similar/same suspension as your e34). Rotors weren't that old, maybe 10-15k miles. Replaced them with Balo blanchard-ground & Raybestos QS ceramic pads & did the very aggressive rapid break-in per the Zeckhausen site:

http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

I must admit I cringed a little when cooking the new pads & rotors but they turned that nice blue tinge with a uniform light grey film of pad material on them and there's not even a hint of shimmy anymore.
