You could buy a used ford for that in the USA. If you drive down the street you'll see pristine used bmw and mercedes from between 3500-7000 USD. It's not unusual.

Call a cab in Europe and it'll be most likely a mercedes or bmw. It's just a common car. The US is the largest buyer of these cars. We're they're biggest fan- and we pay the most. Keep in mind that if you buy a car there, it will cost 1000 to ship it over the ocean. And you will also have to retrofit the cat for emissions. Emissions in Europe are not as strict as say, California. You cannot pass inspection in the USA with a stock European car.

I'd be careful - what they aren't saying is that these offers are for a leased vehicle - the sum advertised is probably whats left to pay on the lease. But eventually the car must be either returned to BMW, or you will have to pay the market rest value.

I don't think so - if you buy it from Germany it will probably meet D3, if not even D4. This standard far exceeds any other emission standard. D standard is even more stringent than E standard (E is based on D!).

Max values in grams per kilometer
D3: CO:1,50 HC:0,17 NOX:0,14
D4: CO:0,70 HC:0,08 NOX:0,07
Turns out that as of this year the designation D is being dropped in Germany in for E in favour of European homogulation.
Can't find the max values allowed in California.

You mean the X5 is a leased vehicle?

More than likely - an X5 for 9k? No such thing as a free lunch, or a car at less than a fifth of its normal retail.
