This afternoon I decided that I would take my first look under my back seat. I supposed I should have been under the seat sooner since I have had the car for almost 2 months but thought I would see what I could find. One of the previous owners apparently had a 3rd party alarm system put in, hence the reason my keyless entry doesn't work. So I started pulling left over wires out that I could find but hit a dead end, the wire went into uncharted territory:

Click the image to see it better, the wires I am talking about in particular are the two that you see that has a buttsplice wrapped in electrical tape and that go off to the left of the picture and are seperated from the bigger bundles.

Ok, so back to the fuse box and keyless entry. I have seen an explanation for the relays in this box but do not remember exactly what they are for, if you have any references I would be greatful.

Now I know that keyless entry has been discussed here and that there is an instruction guide on bmwe34.net but my question is this, is the bundle of red wire you see wrapped up with a tanish cover over the top the wires for the OEM keyless entry controller? If it is not, where do I need to be looking? Also, if possible, I would like to replace the missing system with another original keyless controller. If you have any ideas as to where I can purchase one of these I would really appreciate it.

Not to leave any details out my key does have a fob and its FCC ID is LX8 FZV. As you will be able to see, my key is a little old and the fob has obviously seen better days but I can't see spending $150+ on a new key from the dealer.

All of your help is much appreciated.

No those collection of red wires are 12V +, its just a junction connector

the boxes are for controlling the central locking, windows, how long the interior lights stay on for etc etc

my doors lock and auto close the sunroof/windows etc all from the wiring going into the drivers door, not connections made at all in the rear

but in the rear is how most ppl do it

As I got to doing some research it seems that the key I have is for an E38, and when I go through the procedure for reprogramming the remote it seems to go fine up until the point where the locks are supposed to lock and unlock in rapid succession, maybe due to a bad driver's side(left) lock actuator? I have been to a bunch of sites that tell you that you have to pull a chip out of your remote to reprogram it but, as you can see from the pictures in my original post, no such chip exists.

Just thought I would add my findings to possibly help figure out whats going on (with keyless entry).

hmmm im interested to hear more about this issue also, my key is exactly like yours but the central (remote) locking never workedi opened the key and changed the battery but could never find any "chip" in there, the only thing i found in the key was a little black thingy (very small like aboit 2mmx3mm) that looks like it fills up a space in the fob, it has no connectors on it so i dont think its the chip oh and also my rear doors dont work when i lock or unlock the drivers door ( sorry to hijack your thread)

Yeah, I have noticed that black rectangular place as well. Do you by any chance know how your book tells you to program your remote? My book says to turn the key to accessory pos. 1 for a max of 5 secs, take the key out, then press and hold the large button while rapidly pressing the left button. After that the locks are supposed to move up and down to show that its programmed, but I haven't been lucky enough to get that to work.

Thanks for the replys
