Many of you likely know the notorious V8 engine oil pump bolt coming loose syndrome. I got an V8 motor (Nikasil) at 66 k miles for my 540. The engine is very clean. The valve trains and the sump are spotless.

I want to go over the oil pump bolts before sealing the sump. Naturally the best way is to remove the pump, which I did.

There are 11 M6 bolts, 3 M10's and one nut for the oil pump sprocket. My question is what temperature is the engine oil at running condition? I used Loctite 272 which is good for 450 deg F. But I ran out of it applying it to the 11 M6 bolts. I am left with Loctite 290 which is supposedly stronger but only good for 300 deg F.

I couldn't get Loctite 272 at Pepboys or Autozone, only 290.

should be good as long as you torque it to spec and clean the holes with brake cleaner. were any of the bolts loose?

Yes. I forgot to mention. At 66k miles, the 11 M6's are about 1 ft-lb. The three M10's are about 5 ft-lbs. These are just by my feel. The lone oil pump sprocket nut is very tight though.

I am sure the'll end up in the pan in no time like my existing engine at 144k miles if I do not loctite them.

from the picture it looks like a good time to change to synthetid oil...looks black nasty unless it wasnt ever changed.

The old engine is history. Low and uneven compressions. The new one is of course spotless. But I will do compression before putting it in.

before throwing the old one away theres plenty of reasons for uneven compression even with a good engine.

Making the old engine work will be another project I have not attempted to define. It may or may not be feasible. Does casting number 1 725 963 sound familiar? Anyway, the current project is to get the 540 up and running. If the compression numbers are good I may consider 6 speed conversion.

Smash a couple of the threads on the oil pump nut or simply put a weld there to hold it on. That's what I intend to do.

The three bolts at the base of the oil pump are M8's, not M10. I loctited them with Loctite 290 since I ran out of Loctite 272. Tightened them to 19 ft-lbs. I also killed the nut on the sprocket with a punch.
