This year Bimmerfest was in Santa Barbara. There were about 1500 cars registered, 3,000+ attendees, (but only 26 e34s registered and not everyone who registered attended).

From Bimmer.info it was Califblue (Mike), his friend Pat with the touring, Liquidtiger 720 (Josh), SC David, Pyro, and Hypr5.

Mike, Pat, and I met up in the LA Harbor area and we picked up Josh north of LA. Mike's car went beserk this morning when he gassed it up (maybe a bad O2 sensor) so he couldn't drive it after all his detailing work. Pat races Porsches and drives his touring like a crazy man. I knew I was in trouble when I was redlining it and weaving in and out and dodging cars just in the 2 blocks from the Starbucks to the freeway ramp. But I was so flattered latter when I heard from Mike that Pat said "that chick can drive" but it helps to have a good car.

Saw a group of 5 various bmws travelling together. When we got to Topanga Canyon and got Josh, I was blown away but how beautiful his car was in person. His paint job is to die for.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Bimmerfest06/2JoshSmall.jpg

Even though I have clay barred my car and waxed it, it looked pathetic next to Josh's. And my apline white is yellow looking next to Josh and Pat's. But mine is Alpine White II and theres is III.

It was sooooo fun driving up the coast together--our 3 white e34s. Josh has some pics of this. We picked up a black e28 and a couple of other cars as we got closer, but the big caravan was no where in sight.

Here is pulling into the fairgrounds.

We picked up SC David and the 4 of us parked together. I was really surprised that people came and looked at our cars. One guy used to have a 540 and you could tell he was really sorry he sold it.

An e34 M5 pulled in and it was like royalty arrived. It has an eisenmann that was straight piped and it was loud. I wasn't crazy about the look of the alpina wheels.

Pat said several times how he would take a car over a woman, but he always seemed to be there for the babe shots.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Bimmerfest06/babe4Small.jpg

Here is Mike with the Cheek sisters. Notice that Mike wasn't shy about hand placement. I even had my picture taken with these girls which seemed to amuse them.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Bimmerfest06/babe3Small.jpg

And Josh with them (Josh--pay attention to Mike and learn). David didn't do the babe shoot cause he had his lady with him as you can see to the left.

Bimmerfest has a stated No Tolerance policy. That was sort of confusing since they had refreshment centers.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Bimmerfest06/bev2Small.jpg

We didn't know these refreshment stands would be here so we stopped at a grocery on the way in. At 9 am the cashier said "we have been selling a lot of alcohol this morning--what's going on?" Here you can see Mike with the blue cup that contains the goods. And Jeff, as promised, we had one in your honor. It wasn't your brand but it was close.

Those cups are pretty big, so by 10 am, we were in a really good mood. We started finding things besides the cars to be really interesting.

Mike was fascinated by this tatoo. What was it that you called it, Mike?

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Bimmerfest06/bev4Small.jpg

And fashion is always interesting.

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/Bimmerfest06/bev3Small.jpg

In fact, fashion is sooo interesting I really really wanted a picture of this guys driving gloves. It didn't matter that he was being coached into a display parking spot as I was trying to get the picture.

After lunch, Josh, David, and I took a walk-about of the parking lot. The most interesting thing I saw on the walk about was a large triangular frame that stuck out from the rear of a 7 series. I couldn't figure out what it was but the guys explained to me it was to take pictures of the car in motion. I thought I had a pictue of it but can't find it.

Normally a M power engine would be interesting, but after all the blingy engines on steriods, this one seemed like just another engine.

The three of us agreed that it had the ugliest wheels on it of the entire show. The thumbs down gesture comes from David.

And it is just time to go home. Most of us felt like leaving about 1:30 and didn't even want to stay for the raffle or the road rally.

But the whole event was sooo fun. Thanks to Josh for telling me about it and continuing to bug me to go. I loved it and will go back next year. I think next year I will stay on Saturday night so I can drive home Sunday am when traffic is not bumper to bumper.

I thought it was the prettiest car I have ever seen. This was north of LA and it was driven by a blond woman. I am thinking "trophy wife." Then I got a good look at her and she had a double chin and was generally chubbers. It just didn't seem right. This was one of those times the driver was much more attractive in my imagination because of the car being driven.

I really liked this car cause it was such a unique color and even the engine bay was that color.I have a feeling that is a factory colour, or close to one from that period anyway. I think I remember it a bit brighter, but it could be this LCD screen dulling things. I would absolutely love an E12 528i manual or even a 323i of the same vintage in that shade... (so long as it could have a black interior..)

This photo essay is awesome Gayle, I hope someone makes a site out of the weekend, your pics alone show the historic value of it... the sharks, and of course- that line of great white e34s we're all drooling over! (Well done!) :) nick

These bling bays are nothing like the 'strictly business' look of the modern bimmer bay, or an M-engine. That said I'd like one of those alloy oil caps (black tho) and a strut brace- just to improve the stock dress, not to make it sparkle. I really like a nice clean silver and black finish. Anodized surfaces, like chrome are just so OTT and cheap looking under the hood of a real car.

Checking these pics out is (perhaps) a little like being there... thanks a heap for posting them up and invitiing us along Gayle!!

The e34s stole the show for me of course :)- and all we need to finish it off is a video of your 'spitrited' drive to the on-ramp with the 7ers camera mount you mentioned... :) Nick

Gayle, if you like that e21 with the "weird colored engine bay," go over to bimmerforums.com and click on the e21 section. Cj is his name and he always posts in EVERY thread hosted, so just pm him asking for more pictures if you'd like. I also think he's in the process of turboing it. Anyway, looks sick, wish I was there. Andrew

Wow Gayle!! Thanks for the pics.

Too bad so many people think they need to "Euro" or "Rice" up their BMW's to make them different. That orange/copper color car in particular is F-Ugly.

Oh, BTW, those "little hinges" on that one front lip splitter, those are actually braces to keep that splitter from flexing DOWN too much when it's under load (the air pushes it down, giving more front end grip at speed- that's the theory at least!!)..

And yes, it's too bad, but it seems that ~90% or so of the last couple of years' production of the 635csi came equipped with auto tranny.... :(

Just wanted to add thanks for posting all the pics. That must have taken you ages !

Was good to let us all see around the show, being a few thousand miles away there wasnt much chance of me attending in person ;)

In Portland here on I-5 heaving up north I saw a 430, followed by a 360 modena hard top, probably 20 seconds after each other in the opposing lanes, lol jubiland is the only acceptable term that could possibly touch upon the surface of my enthusiasm. :-)

Lastly, does anyone know is that just just paint on that ///M5 to get the space around the license plate connecting the rear lights black? I love that look, and it would be nice for my silver car!
PM ME if you know!
Thanks guys
-Charles

PS- I love the custom license place "G*YLE" LOL

Lastly, does anyone know is that just just paint on that ///M5 to get the space around the license plate connecting the rear lights black?

Charles, Not sure but I think the black area is a part. Josh has it on his car. You can see his when he is in front of me entering the fairgrounds in the first post. It does look really nice. I bet it would look great on a silver car.

And thanks for the compliment on the custom plate. It really bugs me that they didn't center the letters but I haven't wanted to spend $70 to get do-overs on it. I wish the license plate area looked better in general. I have a black frame that I have thought about putting on but I am not enthusiastic about it. Josh doesn't have a front plate on his--he has the euro thing and it looks so nice. If I lost my front plate, I am sure I would get ticketed.

And to those of you who have commented on how tacky some of the ground hugging stuff is--I totally agree.

One of the things that is so amazing about bimmerfest is that you get the entire range of being a bmw owner from the restored classic, to the stock daily driver, to the modified daily driver, to ricer -- monstrosities.

Our e34s are kind of in a spot where even the really nice ones don't have the restored classic look that the sharks or coupes do, but they are so much nicer than any of the styles following them. Maybe it is because not that many have been repainted that they don't have the restored classic look. I am hoping next year we can get a more organized e34 section rather than just relying of some of us meeting at the grocery and coming in the gate together.

And yes it was time consuming to organize and post the pictures but it helped me appreciate it more. There was a time during the adult beverage section of the day that my memory was less sharp and that is when I saw most of the over the top stuff. Plus there is the general excitement, the overwhelming number of things to see, and the general social banter going on. I think without the pictures it would have been a blur to me about now.

And Nick, I thought the breakfast of champions was pretty funny too. I was dogging that guy about it.

I had my engine bay so clean in December the indys were talking about how you could eat off it, I clay barred my car, attacked it with the porter cable and klasse all in one in January, cleaned the wheels a couple of weeks ago, waxed it with canauba wax last weekend.......

After all that it looked like a dog next to Josh's. And the only thing that kept Mike's engine bay from making mine look bad was he had car trouble. My car's prior owner talked about how he was anal, but the guys on this board are really anal. I now understand what he meant.

I am going to be in Chicago, but I am not bringing my car this year. I probably will bring it next year and I figure it will take that long to get it ready.

kinda makes me wanna do chicago in the e30, till i think of the 900 odd miles there and 900 odd miles back, bout $175 in gas + food + room - missed work / be me being tired as **** when i get back to work = nah ain't gonna do it

hell if it was close enough to virgina id drop by when i go to pick up my grandads truck but that's around 400 miles out of the way in the truck that won't be getting the best of mileage loaded with crap and towing a f350 on a double axle trailer

Winfred, You could make a vacation out of it. When I do drive in 2007, I plan to hit yellowstone and mt rushmore on the way.

I am sure people would be happy to put you up so you dont have the room cost. And you have to eat where-ever you are so no point in counting that. So it is just gas.

If you make it a leisurely fun vacation you won't be tired back at work. You do take vacations don't you? I know you don't like dealing with airport security so if you take vacation you have to drive somewhere--right? Chicago is as good as any place. Maybe we could work out an iteneray for you that includes hunting or fishing on the way up and back. Or maybe guys on the board could take you to t____ bars between here and there. What would it take for you to have a fun vacation?

Winfred--Here is your vacation to attend the e34 picnic.

I figured you weren't that social. That is why I asked about camping. I am already researching it. Campgrounds you could be away from people and comune with nature. Maybe you could even bring that dog of yours.

Here is your tentative iteneray. Now that I know you are into battleships and airplanes, I'll see what I can come up with.

Wednesday--Drive to Memphis (6-7 hours?) --something to see--maybe Graceland

Stay here Meeman Shellby State Park north of Memphis (http://camping.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=camping&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.state.tn.us%2Fenvironment%2Fpa rks%2Findex.html) Camping fee is roughly $16.

Thursday--Drive to St. Louis( 6 hours?) -see the arch. head on up 55 in the direction of Chicago

camp here Carlyle Lake (http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/R4/CARLYLE.HTM) might be able to do dove hunting or fishing in the am.

Friday--Proceed on to Chicago--visit T bars with fellow bimmer.info members

Saturday---e34 picnic--you don't have to talk to us. Just be present for the charter meeting of Post Whores Anonymous and recieve your t shirt.

Sunday--Recover from hang over--see some of Chicago--lot's of interesting stuff here. They have a great lake. The only German submarine we captured in the war is there. Hey guys from Chicago--help me out. What else would Winfred enjoy?

Monday--Drive the other route (57) back. camp here Fern Cliffe (http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/R5/FERNE.HTM)

Tuesday--Drive the rest of the way home.

Anyone know of any other big hunks of metal between Baton Rouge and Chicago that would appeal to Winfred. Anything in St. Louis?

Alright, I just figured out that my photojourney may exceed Gayles in length. Here goes!

Got up a 6:00 AM on Friday morning to meet with some Santa Cruzians for the drive to Gilroy where all the Bay Area people were meeting up. Once we made it to Gilroy I filled up on gas, and parked next to Hypr5 (Donny) and Pyro (Carl).

http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/7599/p1010002small0ay.jpg

Had an awesome drive with about 100 or so cars down to Atascadero. Me and Josh were cruising next to each other for much of the journey. Here are a few of the cars at the In-N-Out burger we invaded there.

http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/1869/p1010020small9lr.jpg

I let the girlfriend man the wheel for the final 150 miles of the journey so I could take some pictures out the window. I never noticed how off my white balance was until now. Sorry about that.

Eventually we got to Santa Barbara. My grandma lives up in the hills so I paid her a visit, and got a free car wash and lodging which worked well in my favor. Josh and I washed the rides...and I found out that my grandma's tenant also had a gray E34. I was going to get a picture with all three of our cars, but he took off before I got the chance. Here's the result of that detail:

Saturday morning I got a call from Josh and Gayle. They were a few minutes away, so I rushed myself and Meagan out of bed and we met up with Pat, Mike and them at the grocery store up the road. Got some food, and then drove down a block to the fest! We all got to park together, and that weird Zeemax M5 parked next to us. The guy didn't say hi or anything.

Okay, now this guy was the rice catch of the day. Spinners, M badge for no reason, LED tails, ridiculously loud sub that rattled the entire car, TV monitors, horrible vanity license plate, but I think that the best part of the car was the license frame. Hang with us here more. We all had each other's phone numbers in advance and got together long before we hit the fairgrounds. We came in the gate together so we could park together. Having your beast in our row next year would be awesome.

So is your M5 your daily driver? Do you work on it yourself? Your beast sounded really good!!!! I am all about the sound. I couldn't get away with having my daily driver be that loud, but I was jealous of how yours purrs and growls. How much of that is the M5 engine and how much is the eisenmann? I am actually digging my new resonator. I like how quiet the passenger compartment is. I have only had my eisenmann less than two weeks. When I first got it, it thought this is not that loud until I heard a valet parker drive it off. I was like "holy s___! that's my car? Who knew it sounded like that?"

When I got home, I told my husband about how you let your kid drive your car but how I won't let hubby drive mine. He just laughed cause its the truth. I won't even let him back it out of the garage because I would come home to road rash when he parked it across the street.

Ray Ban aviators are so 1990s. Ask me how I know.

The lastest thing is Oakley Whiskers. If mine weren't prescription, these are the ones I would have. Zeuk--get "she who must be obeyed" a set of these and she will be calling you "he who must be obeyed."

i've managed to avoid killing my set of these (http://oakley.com/o/o1245d) for the last several years but now they are getting old enough that the lenses are starting to get that crackley look when you hold them up to the sun, after 2-3 years the ear pads get all gross and squishey now i am on my 2nd replacment set of pads, they use to call them "thick" not sure when that changed to "a-wire" but they have been the best shades i've had far and above the couple pairs of raybans that i had before these

I think thats my car in the background! Sorry i missed everyone. I didn't show up till noon bc I was really hungover. Did anybody see my car? I had to park in the back, but i moved closer after lunch. I wanted to show off my computer but i didn't want to stand around by my car.

I won't even let him back it out of the garage because I would come home to road rash when he parked it across the street.

My kids were messing with people. I've let them drive it once and he didn't like it.

I wish that I could have heard your car. To quote the Harley guys "Loud pipes save lives".

I will definatly check in here more often. It looked like you guys were having a great time. Next year the Ramada Inn is going to reserve the whole hotel for Bimmerfesters. The rooms rates aren't too bad, maybe you guys could hang with us. We had a pretty good party the night before.

Not having seen your car in person, I don't think any of us would have recognized it. The only reason we were able to spot pyro and hypr5 was that Josh and David have seen their cars before.

Glad you made it and hope you had a good time. Sorry we didn't connect. You will have to get in on the cell phone list next year.

Did you have painted basketweaves? I remember seeing you pull out I think. There were a lot of unaccounted for E34's there.
