Are you talking about real HID or Xenon look-a-likes?

Look-a-likes do nothing at all except add some white light instead of yellow...
True Xenon does not come in 9006 format unless it's been rebased.

do the 9006-9005 replacement to the low beams, big difference. I use the Wagner brite lights and they have lasted almost 3 years now without a burn out.

In one word "NO" Not at ALL. Do not let your eye's deceive you ;) The only thing they look is a bit prettier.

If you MUST go that route, do a 9006-9005 mod with the 'look-a-likes'. At the very least, you'll get close to stock light output with the 'look-a-like' color you want.

HIR are bulbs that use Infrared... Some people say theres a difference, a lot of people say that they are no better. They are somewhat pricey, considering what they are.

If your looking for an increase of light output / visibility, higher wattage (dangerous for your housings - don't recommend it) or real HIDs is the only way to go.

I've been using a fairly new +30 9005/9006 bulb, Philips Premium. So far I've seen them sold only by European vendors such as Powerbulbs.co.uk ($34/pair shipped). Naturally, I bought the 9005 high beam bulbs and whittled the sockets so they'd fit the low-beam lamps and harness.

I've had the bulbs in the car for about 9 months and drive for about an hour after dark on rural roads every weeknight. The increase in light output has been quite noticeable. Combined with the fog/driving lights (I no longer ridicule people who drive with their "fog lights" on -- with the E34 they really do light up the right shoulder on rural roads) I actually feel like I have enough illumination to navigate safely at highway speeds.

I have HIR bulbs in another car with projector headlamps, BTW (Toshiba 9012s I purchased from Daniel Stern Lighting), and I believe the Philips Premium high beam bulbs come pretty close to the HIRs in performance at half the price. Now we'll see which bulbs have the longest life!

Piaa is prob the best bulbs you can buy pricey tho. Give out great colors. . I tried hyper white and Arctic white bulb but they are not much brighter.

Now I'm running 8000k HID 9006 conversion for 2-3 years now.. Love it. Once you use HID you will SEE there is no comparison.. about $200 now on ebay. it is well worth it even if Xenon-like bulbs are only $20-50..

BTW.. free form headlight actually give out more light output but ellipsoid have a better cut off.

There is NO halogen type bulb that even comes close to REAL HID, period.

I converted my K1200LT motorcycle to HID low beam, and did the same to my '94 525i.

On the motorcycle and car both I tried the whitest high beam bulbs I could find, PIAA extreme white on the bike, and SilverStars on the 525. Both efforts look like pale yellow candles in comparison to the 4-5000K low beam HIDs. I also have a 2001 740iL, which has HID low beams from the factory, same thing, the Silver Star high beam bulbs look pale and yellow in comparison.

DO NOT fall for the high temp HID conversions, 6000K plus. They give out LESS useable light the higher the Kelvin temp. They just get bluer, less lumens output, and piss off oncoming drivers to no end.

There is a good reason OEMs (Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc.) use 4200-5000K only.

OK, Bruno's website calls for modifying a 9005 lightbulb to fit our cars. The Wagner at this link is a 9006, which I guess is the same as the stock bulb.

So the question is does this Wagner 9006 put out the same light as the modified 9005, without having to do the modification? Thanks!

Bought a pair of 9006 Xtec 4000K (80w) bulbs made by Apexcone from my Mech for $34.00 today. They have a lifetime guarantee Got a chance to try them out driving tonight and they are much brighter and whiter than my old yellow halogens. I can see much better and that is the main thing I wanted. Plus they look so much brighter/whiter which I really like.
