View Full Version : Questions about replacing pillar fabric

Hey All,
Thanks to my PO and the NC sun, the fabric on my pillars is disentegrating. I'd like to tackle it soon but (as always) I've got a few questions.
I'm still trying to figure out whether to stay with the OE fabric or go the JonK route with Alcantara.

Have any of you redone the fabric on your a-b-c pillars?

Where do you get the fabric?

Any tips or tricks to the removal of the old stuff or installation of the new stuff?

Thanks!

Here is a pic of Jonk's interior. I think he might have redone his in alcantara, and it looks really nice. I know he did his rear shelf in that too, but i dont have a picture. Do a search for "alcantara" and you might find something. Otherwise, Jon might post here.

Yep, Jon did his interior in alcantera. I was in his car last Sunday, and it was extremely well done. It looks especially good in a car with a tan interior.

Bump.

Yeah, Jon's interior is awesome! I think I'd eventually like to have the Alcantara on the pillars and headliner. That would give me a great looking three tone effect with my gray interior (light on the bottom going to dark up top).

But what I'm after is little tips to make the job go easier.
I.E:
What type of glue?
Keep or scrap the the gray foam layer?
Where to source the materials? (Maximillan Importing?)
etc...

thanks,

Just type in headliner in the serach and you will find a lot in the search. On my website below there is a detailed description with pics. And here are some noce pics from Japan. There is nothing magic about it.
I bought the glue from 3M. For example WLS headliner supplies it or probably any fabric shop for upholstery goods.

...along w/maybe my door inserts....(the ones that used to always pop off)....

and maybe a strip up against the low part of the windshield...where's it's curving and buckling up.....

so where do you get alcantara?

Could it be that the front left tyre on your 6 series is flat?

Indeed it is lol. That 633csi has been sitting there for about 2 years. I am trying to get it for free with an abandoned title.

I have searched in the archives and the web. I can find links to 1/4" headliner materials. However, I need 1/8" material for my rear package shelf. I cannot seem to find it on line. TIA

Shogun,

Thanks for the reminder about your site. I do remember your write-up about replacing the headliner. And thanks for the ebay site, I'll contact the seller to see in he has the gray color in stock.

I did search for info, but couldn't find what I was looking for. After my t-stat gasket experience (what I have to sand the block?) I'm all about knowing the little things that Bentley doesn't contain.

Yesterday my wife was riding with me and said that "we" need to do something about the fabric. This from a woman that typically doesn't understand why I want to improve a 14 year old car. Woo-Hoo!

Again, thanks!

Just found on another E36 board a similar question:

quote

Does anyone know where i can get material to redo sunroof headliner last year i redid the headliner and sunroof and used 1/4" material it lasted about a year on sunroof now it is coming off if anyone could point me in the direction of some 1/8 material i would be very thankfull

From this you can see that you really need the right thickness, especially when you car has a sunroof.
